When I first passed by this place, I looked down upon it because the staff were washing dishes on the curb with the stray cats. You would have to see it to understand what I mean. I don't mean that the cats were actually washing the dishes. Anyway, now Suda is one of my favorites whenever I'm in the Asok area.
I'm just speculating here. But I think Suda restaurant started as a street food restaurant for locals. But then somehow, perhaps due to its proximity to BTS Asok Station and Terminal 21, Suda has become a tourist attraction. Most of the diners are Chinese or Western tourists. Very few locals seem to eat here nowadays. Judging by the decor, it is probably owned and operated by a family of Chinese origin.
Dinner time is the busiest. It is hard to get a table during this peak time because many diners drink alcohol and therefore stay longer than one would at a restaurant. Also, during the busy dinner time, you will wait quite a while for your food because one male chef does all the cooking. The others in the kitchen are just helpers.
Do not expect the staff to be friendly. It is a street-food style restaurant. But they aren't rude either. Some of them do not speak English.
They have vegetarian options for the non-carnivores. Yellow curry (vegetarian style) 100 Baht. Steamed rice 20 Baht (See picture below) Tasted fantastic.
Vegetable fried rice 80 Baht. Easy to make but virtually impossible to make delicious. (See pic)
You will often see cats crawling in the restaurant. A big no-no in the U.S. But this is Thailand.
Menu in English...

Do allow me to criticise this restaurant.
Service is really poor and food is well below average. First of all, I came in to the restaurant and it was pretty much empty with only 2 table seated with customer. And yet there was no one attending to walk ins. Had to take the menu by myself.
Subsequently, I waited and raised hands couple of times but staff simply ignored me for a good 15min while chatting at the back.
Next up, order came really late. A glass of watermelon smoothie took them 15min to serve and the food never did came even after 30min (Just 1 plate of pad kapow - Shouldn't take more than 10min with only 2 table filled in the restaurant)
Waitress in her late 20s was simply rude and said if you want you cancel, I have already placed the order. To which I asked for how long more ? She doesn't bother and said she doesn't know, you want you cancel. And yes of course, I choose to walk away.
And all the while, I watch food being served to foreign customer who came in after. (Racial discrimination)
I highly DO NOT recommend anyone to patronise this restaurant. Do take a look at the 1 star reviews before even stepping in. Rude staff and poor customer service.
Food at pier 21 taste a lot better, cheaper and service is...
Read moreI visited this place a long time ago. Perhaps my first visit was not impressive, I waited many years to return and had dinner twice recently.
A friend mentioned this restaurant exists forever. That old-school style shows its confidence in cooking and the wisdom of running a business for decades. We ordered a few signature dishes, famous papaya salad, fried marinated pork, stir-fried morning glory, and tom yum gong. The Papaya salad is fresh and tasty, and the fried marinated pork is my favorite. But I don't like the Tom Yum soup cooked here, as it tastes boring.
It is popular and the staffers are a bit distant😅 They walk around, but hardly notice your needs either in asking for the menu or ordering food. I don't want to sound biased, but would they be more welcoming to non-Asian guests? Luckily we got to know one waitress Khun Nai. She looked serious but took orders efficiently. We left a tip for her.
The location is just next to the Asok BTS station. It feels relaxing and authentic when you drink beers and eat regular tasty Thai food there.
I might pay a visit soon and hope the service can be...
