The Onion, Koh Samui - A culinary highlight on the island
My visit to "The Onion" on Koh Samui was a real feast for the senses. As soon as you enter the restaurant, you are greeted by a cozy, modern atmosphere that immediately invites you to linger. The stylish, yet relaxed ambience creates the perfect setting for an unforgettable culinary experience.
Ambience and service
The interior of "The Onion" is tastefully and thoughtfully designed. The combination of natural materials, elegant furniture and subtle lighting creates an inviting and at the same time stylish environment. The staff is extremely friendly and attentive without being intrusive. Every wish is practically read from your eyes, and the advice from the service staff is first class.
Culinary experience
The menu at "The Onion" offers an impressive selection of dishes that skilfully combine both Thai and international influences. Every dish I tried was a masterpiece in itself. Particularly noteworthy are:
Starter: The crispy spring rolls with a fresh, aromatic filling and a perfectly matched dipping sauce were a perfect start to the evening.
Main course: The Pad Thai was simply divine. The noodles were perfectly al dente, the shrimp fresh and juicy, and the flavors wonderfully balanced. An absolute must for lovers of Thai cuisine.
Dessert: The Mango Sticky Rice was the crowning glory of the evening. The sweetness of the mango combined with the creamy coconut rice was a poem and rounded off the menu perfectly.
Drinks selection
The drinks menu also leaves nothing to be desired. From fine wines to exotic cocktails, everything is offered here. The homemade iced tea, served with fresh herbs and a hint of lemon, is particularly recommended - refreshing and delicious.
Conclusion
"The Onion" on Koh Samui is a must for anyone looking for an outstanding culinary experience on the island. The combination of exquisite cuisine, outstanding service and a beautiful ambience makes this restaurant a highlight of my stay. I will definitely come back and can highly recommend it...
Read moreVery disappointing meal. The five of us chose here after strolling past, seeing that it was busy and that the reviews were pretty good. It was generally pretty disastrous.
The staff were all pleasant enough and the starters were eventually quite nice. When they first brought them over they dropped the bowl of french onion soup, smashing it and getting a bit on one of us. No problem really - they took all the starters away and brought out new ones about ten minutes later which were alright.
It all went wrong with the mains. We ordered a veggie massaman, chicken noodle soup, veggie noodle soup, chicken yellow curry and sweet and sour chicken. The massaman was okay - very watery and probably the least tasty one we've had in a month in Thailand, but still edible. No tofu either so it was just some vegetables in a watery sauce. The chicken noodle soup and yellow curry were also on the tasteless side, both likewise mostly made up of watery vegetables. The vegetarian noodle soup came out full of chicken initially so had to be sent back. After everyone else had had their mains for over five minutes there was no sign of the sweet and sour chicken, which we had to ask for, and when it did arrive it was cold. We sent that back too and when it eventually arrived hot, it wasn't great either and wasn't finished.
In total two dishes were sent back and one was spilt over us. Despite this there was very little by way of apology, and of course nothing taken off the bill. It was relatively busy but not full, and they had plenty of staff so it can't really be blamed on being too busy. For the low quality of the food it wasn't cheap, either, with the cheapest main course we had starting at 120b. All round a very disappointing meal and I wouldn't recommend eating here. If you're after good Thai food, a few nights before and for only a slightly higher price we had a fantastic meal at Baan Ya Jai, just down the road. It's a small menu of Thai dishes (no Australian steaks or pizzas), but the quality and taste of the...
Read moreWe thought we would try the Onion Restaurant as we had walked past it a couple of times and it looked popular. Service was not very good, despite what we read on the reviews, as we had to constantly remind the waitress about food and drink missing from our order. When the manager was around he had a good overview and directed the staff very well, when he is distracted the service drops and is not so good. Food comes out not necessarily how you ordered it, mains courses before appetisers, might be due to the lack of good or new staff. Our food was overall just OK, Duck was well over cooked and chicken dishes good. Drinks are reasonably priced and their 5 set menus of fish and meat are good value. What we didn't like is that there is no tables set aside for smokers, as the table next to ours had a man smoking a cigar between courses which wasn't good at all and lastly like many other restaurants it had large screens playing adverts, music videos orsport so trying to appeal to all people and missed. We will not...
