Asmalı Cavit — Restaurant in Beyoğlu

This restaurant is one of the best meze restaurants in Istanbul. It has multiple floors and you should make a reservation in advance because usually big groups of people go there during the week and the weekend so it might be hard to find a spot easily. It's food variety if good, they change it everyday so you might not be able to find the exact same meze's each time you go but there are always 4-5 good ones. The waiters have been there forever and they are really friendly, they try to cater to your needs. The prices are really good for such a spot, especially when you include drinks you still end up paying a very reasonable amount. The only thing is it gets too crowded, the tables are a bit too closely placed so the waiters tend to hit your bag or chair when they are passing behind you. We came here because our AirBnB host recommended it. We were lucky and didn't need reservations - we sat in the hallway area. The wait staff were so friendly and did a great job of explaining all of the appetizers/starters. We tried the barlotti beans, stuffed vine leaves, chard, purslane with yoghurt, and a feta spread with herbs. They were all very good but the purslane with yoghurt was an absolute favourite - I've never actually had purslane before. It's like parsley but the texture is softer and flavour is milder. It was totally delicious and creamy with the yoghurt.

We also ordered sardines. They were very well seasoned and the portion was nice. I also really enjoyed trying Raki.

When we first came we thought we were onto a winner. Very traditional Meyhane with lively atmosphere and friendly staff. however the food was disappointing

Food: Starters were tastier than the mains. the calamari wasn’t rubbery and aubergine dip had lots of flavour. Mains were tasteless though and dry- we were expecting more given how busy it was. the portions could have been bigger too. It was very plain, no salad, no sauce. it was just a bit meh!!

service: service was fine however when the bill came it was more than expected. If something is not on the menu (like our meze for raki on the picture) they start to be more adventurous with the prices. On the final bill you can barely read the handwritten by the staff.
