Read moreThis weekend, we finally made it to the much-hyped Malabar Tiffin House (MTH) in Karama, and let me say—it absolutely lived up to the buzz! Despite arriving close to midnight, we faced a 30-minute wait for a table, which speaks volumes about its popularity. But it was well worth the wait.
Once seated, we kicked things off with the Beef Kaanthari, a must-try dish recommended by our server. A quick heads-up: this dish packs a punch of spice, thanks to the Kaanthari (a small, fiery chili pepper native to Kerala), but it was balanced beautifully. The robust beef flavors still shone through, complemented perfectly by the distinct heat of the chili. I paired it with a Kerala Paratha, and let me tell you—it was done to perfection, flaky and buttery as it should be.
We also ordered the Chilli Chicken and Idiappam combo, which was another standout, along with their Appam—soft, slightly crisp on the edges, and absolutely to die for! To finish off the meal, we had the sweet dish of the day, which was surprisingly a Tiramisu. I never expected a casual joint in Karama to serve such a high-quality tiramisu, but they absolutely nailed it.
While I was initially disappointed that their famed Tattu Idli & Mutton Stew was sold out by the time we arrived, I was won over by the other fantastic dishes, and I’m definitely coming back for the Idli and Stew next time.
The ambiance at MTH is simple yet classy, though the seating capacity is a bit limited, which is understandable given the demand. But none of that compares to the sheer quality of food they offer. And just when you think the experience is over, there’s a delightful surprise on your way out—a glass jar filled with nostalgic treats. I grabbed a piece of Mysore Pak, which took me straight back to childhood memories. It’s these little touches that really set MTH apart.
If you’re looking for something beyond the usual fare from Kerala restaurants, this “not so hidden gem” is one...
Read moreI visited "Malabar tiffin house" with my family just two days ago, and the bustling restaurant was packed to the brim, likely due to the Eid celebrations. Despite the long queue, we managed to secure a table. Our experience was a mix of highs and lows.We were particularly impressed by their signature dish, the idli and mutton stew. The flavors were rich and authentic, a true homage to South Indian cuisine. However, the beef curry fell short of expectations, tasting rather ordinary. We also encountered an issue with the mutton dish, which had a peculiar taste that didn't quite align with our expectations. We brought this to the attention of the owner, who was receptive to our feedback. While the prices were reasonable and economical, we didn't find anything particularly unique about the restaurant. It seemed to offer standard South Indian fare without any standout features. One area that could definitely use improvement is the staff's approach to customer service. While they weren't outright disrespectful, they lacked engagement with the customers. We often had to call them multiple times, and they seemed unaware of what dishes were available in the kitchen. This lack of knowledge and attentiveness detracted from the overall dining experience. In conclusion, if you're a fan of South Indian cuisine and are looking for a budget-friendly option, "malabar tiffin house " might be worth a try for its...
