Four of us ate lunch here. It was generally very acceptable. The atmosphere was good and the service reasonable, though not perfect. Surely once your order has been taken at a restaurant at this level, the correct plate should be served to the correct guest without having to ask again? Many good, and even chain, restaurants’ systems now automatically assign each item to a specific seat/guest, allowing individual or any combination of billing and correct serving.
I commend them for listening to the advance notice of my food intolerances and for having prepared a version of the menu for me, with all the unsuitable choices crossed out. I would have been still more impressed if they had actually prepared and sauce I could have, or were prepared to do so. I would also have liked a better choice of zero (or low) alcohol drinks; they only had one Italian lager. Why not a zero cider, say?
I really liked my woodpigeon hors d’oeuvres. My partner thought her pear and cheese starter lacked much pear or cheese, being mostly chicory leaves. She preferred her venison main. I quite enjoyed the same dish, but without a sauce it was underwhelming. Our guests appeared to enjoy their baked cod on lentils very much and the three who had desserts said they were nice, if not exceptional. Glasses of wine were enjoyed by the two people who had one.
I stumbled over the entrance door step, this could be improved with a small ramp, say.
I think the other 3 diners would give 5 stars, but for me it doesn’t quite get there at this price.
Cost, including an automatically added 12.5% tip, was a...
Read moreDisappointing experience. My husband and I ate here only because this place had won a Bath Good Food Award in 2017 for "best steak". Firstly, the steak was overpriced, overcooked and not the best cut of meat. The "pommes frites" were nothing better than the fries you'd get from McDonalds; changing the menu to French does not automatically raise the standard of food. Secondly, we were crammed in the window seat where it was initially difficult to get served and other people who arrived later were served before us. Only when we signaled for a waiter did we have better service. Thirdly, we were placed next to a family of screaming children (one child was under 5 and the other was probably 7). They ran around as if the whole restaurant floor (which is limited space) was their playground, disturbing other customers. Nothing was done about this by the staff. It was only when the toddler came over to our window seat and started drawing on the window sill that I intervened and asked the mother to take her child away, This was an evening meal and the children should not have been out past 8pm. Our romantic meal was ruined. After they had left, I complained to the most senior staff who apologised. When I asked if the clientele was aimed towards couples or "family-friendly" business, he replied the latter and it was unlikely the owners would change this. So if you are looking for a quiet place to enjoy a romantic meal, don't bother. The food wasn't that great anyway. Interestingly, the King William pub in Bath does a better steak and has much better standard of food, so go...
Read moreThe ambience and food were great! We enjoyed the 3 course meal on a Sunday and they offer a reasonable price. We enjoyed the service from both of the black haired lovely ladies today who served us with a smile and sincerity. We genuinely liked the service except for the lady with the blonde hair(we think her name is Lydia). I think she should work on her service manners especially if she is working in hospitality. We have observed her throughout her shift as we were waiting for our orders to arrive. We found her that she would rush and not genuinely ask her customers if everything were all right. She did not wait for our reply and turned her back towards us. She would just ungracefully served the plates as if she did not want to be there. Even with the incoming customers, she would not politely decline them unlike the other lovely ladies. She was swinging the desserts before she placed it on our table and caused the syrup to drip on my shoes and floor. She insincerely apologised but left the mess on the floor and never came back. We asked for the other lovely lady to clean it up as she might step on it or others will and may cause an accident to happen. We flagged it before we left but I hope we were right about the name,as I said, it was the blonde lady on the shift today 24/5. I had the onglet steak which did not have any peppercorn sauce but it was lovely on its own but I wondered looking at the previous reviews that normally it comes with a sauce? Overall,it was a lovely experience hence,we still left the tipping charge but if it were us,we would rather...
