I could not have asked for any better than this restaurant. Fantastic food, service, ambiance, and much appreciated extras for a special birthday!
I had never been before but the reviews looked great so thought I'd give it a go. When I phoned to book a table for a group of 15 of us, the lady on the phone was so nice to speak to. So friendly, even letting me know that because they cook with electricity, not gas, we would probably have a bit of wait for our food. Much appreciated! What a good first impression!
We had such a nice experience here. The staff were just brilliant - so friendly and attentive. The food was delicious (and I felt it came out quickly!), and the prices are very good. The lady who served me checked with me that I was ok with ingredients in some of the dishes after asking if I was vegetarian which was really helpful.
The staff was so generous - I can't believe there was a helium balloon!! I was not expecting that - and the little extras and then the gift drink for my boyfriend just made it even better.
More than I could have asked for. Tokyo Izakaya, thank you very much, it meant a lot to me!! Especially because I didn't know all of the group so hoped they would all like it. We all loved it! And me and my boyfriend are really looking forward to coming back when we're in Birmingham...
Read moreOne of the best Japanese restaurants in Birmingham without a doubt!
We ordered a number of items including tempura platter, cha siu ramen, tempura udon, unagi don, takoyaki, London Tower Bridge maki and Osaka aburi salmon maki. The tempura platter is highly recommended as they came in hot and crispy with light batter. The platter included shrimps, lotus root, asparagus, pumpkin and shiitake mushrooms. It was very authentic and very close to what you’d have in Japan. They have a wide selection of specialty rolls and also good selection of Japanese whisky. The ramen broth was rich with noodles cooked to Al dente and again, authentic is the word for it. Takoyaki was similar to what you’d find in Japan, soft outside with lots of fillings inside, what’s different was the dressing on it. The unagi was just a wee but under seasoned as the fishy taste remained, but otherwise the unagi sauce was still both sweet and savoury. The ingredients in the maki we ordered were well complimented with the sauce and dressings used.
I would highly recommend this restaurant to Japanese food lovers! It is good for any kind of occasions. This place is also very popular so remember to book your table...
Read moreI would say that this place is overpriced and underwhelming. The decoration and overall atmosphere of the place is appealing to people who have never been to Japan but would like a very close replica of a restaurant in Japan. The female server/manager notified me that she would charge me next time for a straw because free beverages like water don't normally receive straws. I found this very absurd as I have attended multiple establishments some of which are Michelin and they have never asked me to pay for straws. I ordered the rice with wagyu beef ( £23) and was alarmed at the portion of the rice and the miniscule amount of wagyu beef considering this was the main part of the meal. I couldn't tell the wagyu beef apart from the seasoning and veg it came with. I understand that the beef is expensive but I believe that it would be better to completely avoid ordering the rice and beef combo and instead ordering them as separate items as you are likely to pay less or similar amount and receive more meat. It was very evident that the manager and overall institution was more concerned with profit than truly providing food portion that adequately met...
