My husband and I took our parents out to celebrate a slew of recent holidays and birthdays, so it was a wonderful opportunity to get dressed up and dine at a very exquisite proper restaurant. All the more exciting that it is new and not well known yet. But it will be on the map in no time!
The food was excellent and the portions were huge! Even the drinks were big, but there was no compromise in quality. Top notch chefs and serving staff; the food was all very fresh and tasted notably well prepared. Everything had that "hand crafted" sort of feeling from the thought of the flavours and dishes to the decor and menus.
This is the sort of place I would go back to again and again. The prices were very reasonable considering the portion size and luxurious dining experience!
When you enter the Ramada Hotel, it is located through the lobby to the left. There is a bar there, but simply ask the waitress to be seated in the restaurant area. We chose to sit close to the kitchen in the back. Very nice decor with vintage style lighting and fun artwork on the walls. It is definitely an upper class sort of place.
After a round of drinks, I opted for the starter of Baby Back Ribs. I read they are fresh pork ribs that are apple smoked in house. The meat tasted hearty, and it had a delicious glaze. I ended up sharing it as it was a very large portion as a starter. We all nibbled on a Grazing Board to share. The vegetarian 'Med" Board had a selection of cheese, olives, bread, etc. Nice way to sample Mediterranean flavours and put off the hungry feeling.
For my main I ordered the Devonshire Braised Ox Cheek. This was one of the best Ox Cheek I have ever had! (it was my first ox cheek I've ever had) But after having it at this restaurant I wouldn't want to order it anywhere else as I now have very high standards. It was very succulent and soft, almost as if it melted in my mouth! The meat was on a bed of delicious horseradish mash ladled with red wine jus. It also came with a side of honey glazed carrots. I'm not normally a cooked carrots fan, but I had to make myself stop eating them as they were so good! This meal was massive and I offered to share some of it with my family.
My Husband enjoyed a huge stuffed and grilled Rainbow Trout, and our parents got the Chicken and Pomegranate salad and Mixed Grill. Everyone was super happy with their decisions and there was more than enough food to satisfy us all.
I was definitely full by the end, but I couldn't resist the desserts menu. Although they have an award winning cheese selection, I wanted something sweet, so I got the Apple & Blackberry crumble with cornish ice cream and single cream. It had a very rustic taste to it; not your typical crumble. This was a very nice way to end the evening.
All in all, as I mentioned above, I highly recommend The Queens Road! Huge portions at a reasonable cost, and no one in our party had any quibbles about anything from the food to the service and decor. I think this place should enter their menu and chef into contests because they stand an excellent chance at taking home all the prizes. The quality and flavour are straight out of...
Read moreI didn't expect much from the restaurant and went more out of convenience as a guest in the hotel. I initially went to the bar and was invited through to the restaurant by the barman. The restaurant had a nice ambience with chatty large tables on one side and solo diners on the other.
I ordered the fish and chips and was pleased with my meal. The fish, once I'd let it cool, was outstanding. Crunchy salty batter, moist chunky fish, and it was huge! The chips were so so, as was the mushy peas. The tartare sauce had a nice zing to it that complimented the fish wonderfully.
Pints of Neck Oil were very welcome, and the service was superb. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place and would definitely come again....
Read moreExcellent food and service. Request for a gluten free meal was met with the response that "as we make most things from scratch, the isn't usually a problem." We both ordered the Slow Cooked beef blade and it was tender, well presented and a joy to eat. The gluten-free cheese-cake (a rarity) followed and was extremely light and the biscuit underneath not at all stodgy. Wine by the glass is expensive, but the wine is good. A place to...
