We visited solely because of the reviews about the food, cheeseboards, ploughman's and pork pies. They looked good. Sadly, although we were within the advertised time, they'd stopped early because they had been busy. Fiat enough, still disappointed for the trip though.
Beer selection was ok, a couple of mainstream cask, and a couple of smaller breweries. Cider selection was large, dominated by Lilly's, but others as well. Staff friendly.
5 start pub for drinks, 1 star for food. I knocked another star as there were a few highly drunk, noisy groups that were continued to be served, and nothing said (there's no security, it's probably not needed most of the time). It's a pub, so you should expect this, but the issue for us was that when I was in the toilet, one of the more drunken men from the group joined our table where my girlfriend was alone. Drunkenly started lethcing on her, before spilling half his pint down himself. I got back just after this, and we decided that was enough for us and left.
We're not local, so unlikely to be back anyhow. I think we had a bad experience that afternoon. It's probably fine...
Read moreThe Old Windmill is an absolutely lovely pub located on the (faux) historic Spon Street. On balance, it may just be the finest pub in Coventry altogether. Not only is the décor rustic and immediately appealing and cozy; the real ale selection is excellent, the staff friendly, and the prices moderate. You simply won't find a better place to relax in the city centre. Just my luck: A day after my visit they were going to launch on their in-house beer festivals - the preparations for which looked very promising indeed. The beers on tap I tried (3) were all fresh and crisp, and there's no doubt in my mind that the rest were, too. Like many old pubs, The Old Windmill is divided into several sections of varying size, so you can have a quiet pint (or three), too. All in all, a first-rate place for CAMRA members and other lovers of real ale. Traditional pub food...
Read moreWhat an experience! The Old Windmill public house oozes atmosphere and it is a MUST if you are near Coventry city centre. A clue that this pub is very old starts with the outside appearance. Once you are inside the pub's age becomes more obvious. Quaint rooms . . . not one of them identical, ancient oak beams, blackened by the passage of time. One of the vertical beams is a tree around which the pub was built. Get this, The Old Windmill was built in 1451, thirty four years before the end of the Plantagenet era. Interestingly, there is a priests hole tucked into the side of one of the old fireplaces. Now, down to other things. There is a great selection of beers, wine and spirits. Grub is on-hand too. This public house is a must. Do try it, there is parking close by, you will definitely not be...
