Nothing special but that was the problem. Afternoon tea at the grand hotel should have been a really special experience. When we arrived we were very impressed. We were welcomed in a beautiful building by a staff member dressed in top hat and tails, then we were ushered into what felt like the beck room of the hotel for afternoon tea. The staff - not even neatly dressed anymore showed us to our table. We were congratulated on our "special occasion" but not once were we asked what that occasion was! The food was nice but not amazing, and we did wonder how long the sandwiches had been sat out for as some had started to dry out. The fruit scones had one sultana stuck on the side which actually made it look like a plain one that had a rogue sultana attached. We were offered water for the table and then charged (a lot) for it. Weird when tea and coffee were included - apparently not water! I could go on about the details that were lacking such as pips in the lemons, having to ask to have butter for the scones, water stained cutlery etc etc. If we had got this in a cafe for half the price we'd have been delighted, but it wasn't what we expected from a place such as this, and the very...
Read moreConsidering we had booked an Afternoon Tea for a baby shower back in March, and had notified them of different allergies that they said they could cater for, the service was an absolute shambles until a lady member of staff came on shift around 3pm !! We had booked for 1.15 to eat at 1.30pm. The food for one table was served out, but our table was still waiting! I was still waiting for my sandwiches at 3pm!! Also, they could have easily organised the two tables into a square so we could all set each other and chat whereas two lines of people had their backs to each other. Overall, I was extremely disappointed but we made the best of the situation for my daughter because it was supposed to be a lovely treat for her, my grandson and her family and friends. I'm just so pleased that my daughter's friend has a lot of experience in hospitality and she managed the situation brilliantly!! I certainly will NOT be recommending The Grand to anyone for...
Read moreDefinitely not worth it. We were very excited about this, as we wanted celebrate Father's Day here, but just when we sat down at the table, we were told that our daughter didn't have a booking so they may not be able to have her afternoon tea. Even I specifically requested the booking for all of us including her. But the food is poor, considering the price we paid for. We had the Champaign Tea, but for 1 glass of a just normal Champaign is not worth the price. Sandwiches were just ok, nothing really outstanding. Staff (but one waiter) were not particularly the best. To be fair, the best thing was the tea selection ( all very, very good), pastry (overall good) and the glass of a French white I had (way better than the Champaign) There are many other places in York to explore, so we probably...
