A Royal Treat with Room for Improvement: Afternoon Tea at The Grand, York's Rise My recent visit to The Grand, York's Rise for afternoon tea was a special occasion – a romantic birthday celebration – and my first experience with this delightful tradition. Having pre-booked and made specific birthday requests, we were excited to indulge in what promised to be a luxurious experience. We were particularly charmed by the limited edition Lunar New Year menu, a thoughtful and festive touch.
Overall, we enjoyed our afternoon. The ambiance of The Rise is undeniably grand, and the food itself was a treat. As a first-timer, I found the selection of delicate sandwiches, pastries, and scones to be both beautiful and delicious. However, while the experience had many high points, some minor shortcomings prevented it from reaching its full potential.
While some staff members were wonderfully attentive and helpful, others seemed less engaged, which slightly dampened the overall atmosphere. For such a prestigious establishment, consistency in service is key.
Additionally, while our birthday requests were noted, some of the finer details were unfortunately overlooked. These small oversights, while not detrimental, did detract from the feeling of being truly pampered on such a special day.
Despite these minor disappointments, we left The Grand having enjoyed our afternoon tea. The setting is undeniably impressive, the food was good, and the occasion itself was memorable. With a little more attention to detail and a more consistent level of service, The Rise could truly live up to its five-star rating and create an even more exceptional experience for its guests. I would recommend The Grand for a special occasion, but with the caveat that it's worth double-checking all the details of your booking to ensure a truly flawless...
Read moreA birthday present from a close friend recently gave us the opportunity to enjoy afternoon tea at the Rise Restaurant. From the moment we were greeted at the door and shown to the restaurant the service was exemplary. The care taken to ensure we had the best experience was a true reflection of the service standards that The Grand commits to on it's website. Siri looked after us during our visit and ensured our drinks were kept topped up throughout the afternoon. The afternoon tea was perfectly presented and the sandwiches and savouries set the tone for the afternoon tea. We had no special dietary requirements so enjoyed the standard menu items - everything was full of flavour although I found the goats cheese on top of the mini quiche a little over powering however my husband thoroughly enjoyed it. The cakes all looked perfect, the chocolate mousse was my favourite with a wonderful velvety chocolate mousse that melted in your mouth. I didn't enjoy the tapioca in the strawberry mousse and felt that was lacking a little in taste but both the rhubarb sweet and the white chocolate and pistachio millefeuille were wonderful. There was no need to hurry, you could take the time you wanted to really enjoy the food and the atmosphere. Tea and coffee flowed and we were immediately offered some tap water on arrival which I always prefer rather than having to ask. A wonderful birthday gift and a big thank you to Siri for looking after us so well and preparing our takeaway doggy bag so we could continue to enjoy the treat the...
Read moreThank you to Weronika and the other members of staff who served our family group of 6 last night, celebrating the graduation one of our sons. We’d visited the 1906 bar a couple of months ago and had some ‘bar snacks’. These should have prepared us. Because the surprise twist is that not only were the mini Yorkshire pudddings with roast beef delicious (which we thought was probably a given) but also they were more ‘medium’ as in size, as in not only tasty but also a quite reasonable portion. So we left 1906 actually quite full. So last night we gain left The Grand quite full! Which wasn’t necessarily an expectation. Very helpful and professional staff. Fantastic starters. I was torn between crab, pâté en croute and the scotch egg. The crab was delicious, the paté delightful but the Scotch egg was the one I wanted to fight my eldest son for. My youngest cheekily asked if he could have the Wellington. I said no. Then I had a look at the menu. And ruminated. And so four of us had Wellington. This was a very good idea. We love beef wellington and the ones that arrived were brilliant. Beautiful beef fillet that was perfectly rare and buttery. We were there with my wife, three growing sons from 16-23 and the middle son’s girlfriend. Wines were I think both excellent and very reasonably priced. Tattinger Brut at £90, Craggy Range Bordeaux blend at £57 and when there wasn’t the Port we asked for three glasses of Quinta do Noval 2019 arrived. A great...
