Pros: excellent with our children, attentive and pleasant staff, food hot, fast service, dolmades were delicious. The ambiance is welcoming and although the decor is tired and dated it was friendly and cosy.
Cons: it's not Greek food. The kleftico hadn't met a garlic bulb, oregano, feta or olive oil in it's life. It was a huge disappointment after really looking forward to a good Greek family meal. I would liken the kleftico to those vaccum packed shanks you can get from the supermarket, complete with gravy - it's the first time I've ever had Kleftico with gravy. it was served with boiled potatoes and cauliflower cheese which both lacked flavour and had been overboiled. The carrot battons and roast potatoes were fine but all in all it looked like we were tucking into an expensive Sunday dinner. Not the Greek experience we had anticipated. A tiny bit more effort could have transformed it (pop the lamb shank into a open tinfoil parcel, pop the potatoes around it, drizzle with a little garlic olive oil and white wine, a sprinkle of fresh oregano, a couple of slices of tomato on top and a few cubes of feta, shove it under a grill for a few minutes until it browns a bit and serve it in the tin foil on the plate). It was a bit weird having silver service at the table - someone spooning the veg and potatoes onto our plate rather than allowing us to help ourselves. The pasta bolognaise ordered by one of the kids and a meal that has never failed before, tasted like dill had been added, similar in flavour to the dolmades filling, consequently he didn't eat any of it. The hummus wasn't spectacular, lacked garlic and seasoning for my taste but it would have been forgiven had everything else been satisfactory. It was an expensive mistake at almost £90 for 2 adults and 2 children for effectively a mediocre lamb dinner.
It's such a shame. So much of this place is right. We felt very much like we had stumbled across a little Greek taverna, friendly and welcoming, and it put us in the holiday mood but the food just totally missed the mark. There was nothing Greek about...
Read moreManaged to get a reservation for 17.45, my Mom and I were treated very well, I had 3 course meal, my Mom 2 courses, I had the Starter of the Greek Salad, fresh crispy, and just enough, even though I do not like olives of any kind, I had the beef in red wine sauce, my Mom had the Chicken in what would have been in the white mushroom sauce, however my Mom does not like mushrooms and the chefs kindly made the sauce without, only one house red, which was very nice, but would have liked a choice, My Mom used the services on the restaurant floor, as she is partially sighted, on her return I went to use the services down the stairs. Because of the steepness and narrowness of the stairs, I of course was using the bannister, although I did have ankle boots on with small heels on, not high, but I did have flared trousers on, which got caught in my heel, I fell and twisted my body and sadly found myself in A&E with a small fracture. This is not a complaint just a word of advice, for anyone planning to wear any heel, and anything flared, be it trousers or a dress. Take care on the stairs, the sign says mind your head, but please mind your feet. I wear heels all the time, but did not realize how the narrowness would cause problem with my flared trousers. One customer was just coming out the services, but did not see my fall, I told the waitress when I eventually made it back up the stairs.
I always leave a tip if the food and the service is good, as living abroad means you appreciate the extra mile that waitresses go through and the chefs. Desserts were provided to take away. I must admit, I did expect a Thank you when they realised they had been left a tip. Which as someone who worked in the past in restaurant as both waitress and a cook, I have always always made sure that I recognize a kindness when given. This as I said does NOT takeaway the quality of the food eaten. Food excellent, plates warm. Never heard a Microwave, if there is I would think not too many of them, not like some restaurants I would never return...
Read moreLooking for somewhere to eat on a Saturday night we headed just out of town as that is where you find the best places right? We passed George Michael's which looked a bit like a pub from the outside. A guy going in said "get yourselves in here it's great" Well with a recommendation like that how can we refuse 😆 It was lovely like being transported back in time with old beams and pictures of Greece on walls. Look like it had stayed the same for 40 years...not in a bad way l love the mid 80s everywhere had character and this place has too. Open kitchen busy servers attentive and informative too. They have been there 25 years quite a fete with the lock down price hikes in food and cost of utilities increases We had lamb kleftico and sea bass. Both generous A side dish of boiled potatoes AND roast potatoes in a silver side dish with vegetables completed this meal I had small carafe of wine half litre l love this as its 2 large glass but feels like your own bottle A guy on table next to us had steak which they brought out and flambé in front of him. Again a blast from the past and a bit of theatre too. Apparently this guy always has this steak when here and it's the best he's ever had. Was happy with my lamb Kleftico as it was very big and tender but loved the look of this steak 😋 Lovely experience..we love you George Michael From the Ghost singer...
