It was a cold, wet afternoon when we were looking for a warm cup of tea with a scone to go with it we walked into Mrs Tickit's pantry only to be greeted with a tenative welcome and an excuse of not having a table available for us. A family of three assured us that they were leaving and offered their table to us. Another couple offered to take that small table and offered a larger one to the three of us leaving the staff with a sense of defeat. We were served the most insipid, cold, hard cheese scones that had to be crushed with the jaws. A tea pot too landed on the table with no hint of the variety of leaves it was brewing; perhaps we were just unlucky to get England's most unremarkable ones. A notice near the table described the right etiquette to have tea and keeping with its spirit we met our drink with equanimity and profusely thanked the servers before finally stepping out of a place that definitely has the potential to be Rochester's best tea shop. In some sense we were lucky, a few other who attempted to step in were sternly told, "We are closing". (Or were they lucky, I am wondering.) We drove home and made tea ourselves. Why waste a cold, wet afternoon sulking over what could have been a memorable experience, we reasoned. Keeping aside tea and the service, it is a cosy, charming place at the best spot...
Read moreI went in today with my mum and two young children. We were greeted with "you'll have to sit there" as a staff member pointed to a large table. My mum moved a cake stand from behind the seat and put it at the other end of the table, as she didn't want my 1 year old or 3 year old to accidentally knock it over. The same member of staff asked my mum to put the cake stand back. My mum explained why she had put it there and the woman then said "it has to go there. If they knock it over you'll have to pay for it." So my mum said qcould it not just stay there then. The rude woman said "no you should teach your kids not to touch". Of course we do but accidents happen and a 1 year old certainly wouldn't understand that. I've never been spoken to so rudely. We left and I will never...
Read moreCannot praise this little establishment more highly. Beautifully decorated, and laid out so that each table has enough privacy to have conversation without being overheard. The lady who served us was an absolute delight and made the whole experience really pleasurable, she is so friendly and personable, even though whilst we were there she had to deal (twice!) With a very rude customer. The prices are very reasonable for the lovely food available; which is exactly what you would expect for an adorable little tea shop- sandwiches, toasties and the like, and all served on gorgeous China plates. It was just the most pleasant experience, even in spite of the covid measures and we can't wait to go back! 10/10...
