A fantastic small pub with a history of 150 yearâs service serving good beer to the city of Chester and its military. Quite simply put , this place is what all small independent pubs where like at the turn of the 20th century. Itâs a time capsule, of a place, totally given towards and the theme of the Great War 1914-1918 .
If youâre a modern progressive millennial type who gets slightly âoffendedâ at the concept of empire and history of this country, then my advice is give it a miss, as it may well offend you đ with the glorious patriotic early British interior of the early 1900s, and a complete delight of first war decor and posters .
Seriously, though this is a fantastically well run pub which values and follows traditional licensing hours. Always check online first , for example, they are closed on a Sunday.
The beer is good, very good . The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming and the food is utterly sublime in so much as it is the best home-made pub food you will find in the city, but not the so-called modern pub classics that are forced down in chain pubs, not here, this is totally home-cooked good standard British stuff â you wonât even find chips on the menu - mashed potato and veg with a glorious array of things like mince and tatties , haggis and curryâs all standard as they call them âtrench rations â the puddings are also to die for..
The other good thing about the Albion is that there is no music or television â you know a pub where you can go to drink and talk to people âŠsound like a winning combination doesnât it .
All in all, if you want to experience pubs how they used to be in England this is the place. In the nicest possible way, I will say also it is not family friendly, in the sense of itâs a âtraditional â establishment, but by no means rude, so itâs not a place for mums and toddlers and fancy coffees
But if you want a good pint with a good steaming plate of hot food with something with custard afterwards, and saver a atmosphere and history of the 14-18 war, than this surely is not just the best pub in Chester, but I donât...
Read moreA special pub by virtue of the extra miles that have gone into the decor. The experience is almost equally a museum than it is a pub. Stuffed with Victorian and war-era antiques and ephemera (signage, etc). Even down to the wallpaper it has been curated with obvious love and care. Worth a visit to experience the surroundings just by themselves.
I visited on a quiet afternoon and the staff were happy to talk to me and I felt very comfortable sat with a pint as the rain set in outside. The pub cat adds another layer of character.
I also understand - though I didn't try it myself - that the food is quality home-cooking.
This is not a pub that will be everybody's thing, but that's the whole point. It's brave enough to be distinctive. It would be tragic for any venue of this kind to go overlooked. Use it or lose it!
One constructive suggestion from me would be to substantially expand the ales and turn it into a place renowned in the city for good beer. I appreciate this is a risk when business is slow but harness the spirit of "if you build it, they will come!" I know several venues in Sheffield which have a historic nostalgic pub design and are not located on main thoroughfares (The Blake, Sheaf View, The Wellington, The Gardeners Rest) - all of them get customers in droves because of their strong choice of drinks which is now increasingly seen as a prerequisite. It taps into potential of a younger audience, post-grads etc as well as the weekend warriors on the real ale trail, who would keep this place alive for many...
