See the full report. This is in two parts. The first my general experience. The second unfortunately my last, and please it isn't my enduring experience.

1st Wonderful place. Visit York once a year for a weekend and visit everytime. Food is delicious and well made, good choice of wine and the staff are very cheerful. Been visiting since 1990s and never a bad meal.going again soon so hope the crab ravioli is on - yum yum!

2nd OK, so I went last night. I will give it a four rather than my previous five as I still really love the place, I say this because I was disappointed at the service. Food good as usual, but the service smacked of going through the motions. It was busy, but light the table oil lamp, make sure the cutlery is all there, and for heavens sake say sorry when this is pointed out to you rather than stay silent. I love this place so don't make me feel that I don't count. As I said a bit disappointed and the staff did not excel themselves. Let's hope this was a one off. I go here for my birthday so want it to be special. I think I've been pretty reasonable in...

The highs of my dining here were the lovely atmosphere and the friendly and attentive staff. But I was expecting something a little more authentic based on the Google reviews. Mozzarella in carrozza turned out to be just two pieces of breaded mozzarella, not the deep-fried toast. The pizza base was just wrong (but the toppings were generous and tasty), and pasta all'amatriciana does NOT call for red and green peppers (none at all in fact) and pasta shouldn't be served with garlic bread. The food was nice, and I have no issue with restaurants adapting to local taste. I just wish one of the reviews had pointed this out beforehand, as I feel a bit cheated by the 4.7 star rating (not the restaurant's fault, more the fact that most English people have never tried actual Italian food). I still gladly give it 5 stars for service and atmosphere. The food came quickly and was...

Highly disappointed!! Our first time visiting York last weekend and I’d searched which restaurants to try whilst here - this one was the one that stood out to us as we absolutely love authentic Italian food as a family - especially our 10 year old daughter! However, we arrived an hour and a half before closing time - as stated online but unfortunately upon arrival we were given the cold shoulder straight away, no apology, no greeting - the man at the desk stated the chef had stopped cooking, never heard of this before, however this would have been ok if another couple hadn’t have entered after us and been offered a menu and a table? They hadn’t precooked as they asked us as we were leaving if the place was closing - to which I told them apparently so. My daughter was extremely disheartened as she also saw them be seated through the window. Very disappointed in...

Visiting York and heard of Totos as a recommendation with it being a family run Italian restaurant. Both myself and my partner felt the service was a bit rushed and the two waiters we had didn't seem to come across as friendly. They did check up on us during our main albeit were nearly finished. We however could not fault the food. The chefs did an amazing job with our meals. We had a lovely garlic pizza bread to share that was just the right amount of garlic. The two mains were a bolognese pizza and risotto marinara which was very authentic. Ending on the classic tiramisu which was strong. While the decor was nice I believe it would have been much better when it gets darker outside to get that nice atmosphere. All in all, food brings the rating up while service brings it down.

Toto’s in York is an enduring family favourite and a true local gem that’s never missed a beat in over 20 years of visits. Now that I live nearby, I’m lucky enough to go regularly - and it continues to impress every time. The food is consistently excellent, with the special mussel starter being a particular standout when available. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the service is always spot-on, with a friendly and attentive team who make you feel right at home. Just outside the city walls, it’s well worth seeking out if you’re visiting York - you won’t be disappointed.

This is a lovely restaurant. We all had pizza, which was simple and elegant. It's not the most exciting of venues, as in you won't find many particularly unusual dishes on the menu, but what it does serve is served well, even if it might be simple. My only real criticism is that the washrooms could be modernised/cleaned up a little. But the overall feel is quite authentic (maybe not authentic Italian, but certainly authentic Italian imitation!) My reccommended dish is the breaded mushroom starter. But I think everyone I went with would reccommended everything they ate.
