⭐️ Buddies Fish & Chip Shop, Brighton — 9.5/10 🌊🐟🍟 Mini Summary: 🔥 The best fish & chips I’ve had in Brighton — no exaggeration ✅ Crispy, flaky, fresh — cooked to perfection 🤝 Staff go above and beyond to make you feel at home 💳 Card accepted, no awkward cash-only drama ⚠️ Slightly pricey soft drink, and watch out for small bones in the cod if ordering for kids
🐟 FOOD: Flaky, Fresh & Full of Flavour This isn’t your average tourist trap fish and chip shop — it’s the real deal, and they clearly want you to enjoy it.
Cod & Chips (£13.50): The fish was beautifully flaky, white, and juicy — zero dryness. The batter? Unreal. So light, crunchy, and golden without a hint of greasiness. You can see the care with herbs sprinkled on top, giving it a fresh, seasoned edge. ⚠️ I did find a couple of small bones in the cod — not a huge deal for adults, but something to be careful with if you’re ordering for kids.
Chips: Crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside — freshly made and piping hot, with no black burnt bits. You can taste the difference when a shop actually cares what they’re feeding you.
Curry Sauce (£1.00): A rich, thick, and satisfying sauce — just the right heat and texture. Not watery or bland. It complimented the chips and fish perfectly.
Fanta Lemon (£2.20): Classic pairing with fish and chips, but honestly a bit overpriced for a can — that’s London pricing creeping in.
Presentation & Portions: Served with real cutlery, not flimsy wooden forks. Clean plate, fresh garnish, and a nice little salad with dressing — those small touches make a difference. Plus, the portion size was generous — no skimping here.
Affordability & Intention: And here’s the thing — it’s affordable. You can tell they’re not trying to rinse tourists or locals. They want people to come in, try proper food, and choose them over the Burger King next door. And you absolutely should.
😊 CUSTOMER SERVICE: Better Than the Food (And That’s Saying Something) Warm, smiling, and genuinely welcoming. Let me cut ahead of someone still deciding — small gesture, but thoughtful. Offered me inside or outside seating, brought my plate to me directly. Asked for mayo? No issue. Asked for napkins? Got loads, happily. Cleaned my table, handed me a proper fork and knife — no stress, no fuss. Card accepted — none of that sketchy “cash only” business. It’s that kind of service where you walk in a stranger and leave feeling looked after.
🧾 Total Cost: £16.70 Cod & Chips: £13.50 Curry Sauce: £1.00 Fanta Lemon: £2.20
⚠️ Heads-Up: 🐟 Found a couple of bones in the cod — caution if ordering for children 🥤 Fanta at £2.20 is overpriced for a can
💬 Final Thoughts: It’s clean, it’s friendly, it’s fast, and the food is honestly next level. But what really makes this place shine? The feeling that they genuinely want you to enjoy your time there. They’re not some overpriced tourist trap — they’re serving quality at fair prices, hoping you’ll come back again instead of getting a soggy Whopper from next door. I came in on my own, and they made me feel completely welcome. This is how a proper fish and chip shop should be run.
🌟 Verdict: Hands down, the best fish & chips I’ve had in Brighton — and maybe even the UK. Come for the food, stay for the warmth. You’ll leave full...
Read moreCasual visit to Brighton, intending to watch the champions league final in a bar. We stumbled across buddies as everywhere else was full. At first glance we were impressed at the quaint decor and tables. We were seated on a table for two and all was well. Around 10 minutes after sitting, we were told by staff that we had to move to a different table because another party of six had requested a seat indoors. We were pushed to move regardless of our preferences. It was around 2/3 minutes after placing our order that our starter came to the table, nachos which were thrown onto the plate with cheese which was obviously microwaved as half hadn't even melted. The salsa was also piled onto one side of the plate. We had finished our starters but our mains were served almost immediately afterwards, a burger and pesto chicken. The burger itself was sloppy, rare and the pulled pork was stone cold. The pesto chicken was served like the nachos, slopped onto a plate. It wasnt stated that the chicken came with cheese but it was covered in it, it was a thick blanket.
We had extreme difficulty raising extra drinks orders or queries with staff as they were all running around especially the manager. It looked as though he was unable to control the restaurant effectively. He too was running around and at one moment we observed him punching on the restaurant walls in frustration. His tone with customers was completely unwelcoming and it was as though he was focused on quick service rather than quality service.
I wouldn't recommend this place, I wish I could because the sea view was lovely. There are a lot more...
Read moreDon't bother with this place particularly not if ordering on diliveroo basically robed me of my money no food ever came dispite it saying it had been delivered. No answer when ringing rubbish may as well throw your money down the drain.
In response to rply, yes I phoned diliveroo 3 times, they did answer however when they tried to phone you on my behalf you didn't answer the phone to them either. They made it clear to me that they did not have a rider who had picked it up who they could call to ask where the food was, as no one had picked it up. (I was very frustrated with diliveroo when a minute after telling me this the app updated to say the food was delivered). There fault not yours. However I find it very hard to believe u can see my order being picked up on CCTV as I doubt u watched back over an hour and half of CCTV footage (the time between the order and your closing) to see if my order was picked up ... and even if u did, which I really doubt, unless I was the only person who ordered food from you via diliveroo that night how could you tell it was my order?? I am glad I used a third party to order tho as at least I got a...
