This was the first time I have been back to this restaurant since it was called 'The Tiffin' many years ago so I was looking forward to it, also it was a small university reunion dinner with friends. Upon entering first, my friend and I were not really welcomed with a warm approach as I noticed from other patrons (who happened to be non Asian). Seemed like more attention was given to 'westerners' by the manager. Not once did he come to our table to check if everything was alright during our meal like we saw with the non Asian diners. We are all paying customers, regardless. Out of the four main dishes, two were not satisfying by a long shot. These were both ‘Madras’ dishes and seemed like they were just covered and quickly cooked in an extremely spicy chilli paste. You could still see the chilli on closer inspection. Both my friend and I could not taste anything but chilli and our mouths were burning after the first taste! I requested some water quickly and they actually brought some yoghurt too as they could see how uncomfortable I was which was nice of the waiting staff. I requested for the ‘Vindaloo’ or higher curry to be taken back and made milder because this is not what ‘Madras’ is meant to be like. Sure it has a little kick but not to burn your mouth to point where you can’t even enjoy your food! What came back was a mixture of cream/ yoghurt so I had to settle for a ‘Dopiaza’ style curry. Not what I wanted at all when I first ordered. I should state that a ‘Madras’ is my ‘go to’ dish every time I eat at an Indian restaurant so I know what it should taste like give or take a little variant. This place is overrated in my opinion, the decor could also do with freshening up because it has not really changed much with the times and they clearly are all about profit because I noticed how close the tables were to each other with one couple even directly next to the entrance door! I would recommend you go try another place on London Road or nearby Granby Street (there are many to choose from) unless you like a hyped up, over priced restaurant experience. I don’t pay attention to ‘awards’ no longer because it shows that some places live on it then let their...
Read moreBeen here many times but tonight may be the last, Went earlier than normal and more staff than customers so served immediately. Popadoms and drinks arrived quickly and then a few minutes later the starter arrived, it seemed like they were trying to rush us which is quite annoying so we asked the staff member not to bring main meal out for a short while. They were obviously watching us and the meal arrived as we took the last mouthful of the starter. The waiter did say that the meal had been ready so had bought it out promptly which wouldn’t have been a major problem other than it lost its temperature not long after it had been served. We ate it without complaint as we were hungry but it was not enjoyable. Staff started clearing table before we had finished eating which is also very annoying. Refused dessert and went to bar to pay bill. Explained to manager that food was nowhere near as good as the many previous visits, he said that food had not been served in in preheated dishes then obviously had stood waiting to be served, hence the drop in temperature and he then told staff member not to do this to other food waiting to be served. I did not ask for refund or reduction but was not even given a sincere apology. I have waited a few hours to post this very negative review as we have had many decent meals here but money is hard earned and going out to eat is a treat now and I regret spending anything there this time. Consistency is one of the reasons we travel to this place but feel very let down not only with the food but also the response to my complaint. I would normally recommend this place to anyone and do on a regular basis, I note that manager does not respond to reviews but do invite his comments to this one as I would not like this to have been...
Read moreMe and my friends were very hungry and decided to go out for dinner. It was just 9:30pm and we decided to go to Mumbai inn looking at how many awards it had received. Unfortunately the restaurant manager welcomed us with a serious face making us feel uninvited and unwanted. He made us wait next to the bar and place order before he took us to our table, which was very insulting for my friends and I. Regardless, we thought those awards were given for the food and not for the poor hospitality, we decided to stick around. To our surprise the food was very bland and had no salt in it. The biryani was served with dal. I mean who serves chicken biryani with dal? Also fresh orange juice wasn't what I thought it was. He poured it out of a tetra pack. When we told the manager the food doesn't have salt, instead of asking what was wrong and taking to the kitchen and fixing it he started arguing saying that this same rice is used to make multiple dishes hence there's no salt. Fried rice didn't have salt, biryani didn't have salt, and also the jumping prawns didn't have salt. Everything was just bland and not at all edible. We had to finish our food just because we were starving and paid for this overpriced and overrated dishes and also because the manager refused to take it back inside. I highly recommend you not to go to this restaurant, this isn't what Indian cuisine tastes like. Please don't mistake this restaurant for an Indian restaurant. This behavior is very poor, disgusting, and also very disrespectful. The waiter wasn't rude but was helpless because of the...
