After a day out in nearby Bakewell and Derby, we came back to Buxton to try another restaurant for dinner. We didn't make any table bookings in advance, but was lucky that there were some tables available for non-reservations at the time (on Friday, 27th Jan at 6.30pm). We were greeted and seated promptly. Drinks and food menus were offered quickly and a complimentary jug of water was given without us asking. Which made us feel more welcoming and comfortable after a long day. There are a lot of choices for drinks (non- and alcoholic, hot and cold) and food (with vegetarian options). A pre-theatre set menu was also available. We chose the scallops & crayfish salad for starters and Ribeye steak with (extra cost) peppercorn sauce. The scallops were fresh, sweet and tender, as were our big Ribeye steaks - which were cooked perfectly to our request (medium cooked) - see photo. The music in the background was relaxing and not too loud, the decor was amusing - especially the French man mannequin at the entrance front door. We just couldn't resist taking a photo beside him! The toilets are located in the bar dining area, just around the main restaurant dining area. The tables are spaced out effectively so we don't feel crowded. The waitresses and floor manager are all very friendly and helpful. Service and food was excellent as were my mocktails, "feisty red head", which was pretty to look at as well as delicious and thirst quenching.

My friend and I ordered 2 different cocktails, they both tasted awful. However I did not send my back because I was very thirsty. Anyway my friend attempted to send her back after one sip and requested it to be changed for a prosecco drink due to the bad taste. The staff told her she will be charged for the prosecco because saying that she didn’t like her cocktail was not an acceptable reason to them. I would say the problem with those 2 cocktails were that the juice they used taste like very cheap juice plus you couldn’t taste the alcohol in either of them. I have been to the restaurant before and had good experiences with the food every time but won’t be going back due to the bad service we received in this occasion. I would have understood they refusing to change the cocktail if someone try to send it back after drinking some of it but after one sip, clearly something was wrong with the cocktail. I would suggest to people if you are after cocktails to go next door to the cocktail bar, those cocktails are excellent there.

Whilst visiting friends and family I found myself staying in Buxton. The hotel reviews were not so good regarding the food, and I was recommended by the lady in the hotel lift, to come here. So I did. Firstly it had to be dog friendly. So that Denver could come with me. Then the food had to be great. And I wasn’t disappointed. Denver slept through the experience last night and tonight. The staff are particularly lovely team of girls. Clearly all friends. Clearly all very relaxed around the various visiting diners. Nothing has been too much trouble. Nothing I’ve asked for has been an issue, and I have a lactose problem. Even the chef came out to discuss my situation! Front of house is a very lively French chap called Gerry. I real live wire and knowledgeable regarding the food and alternatives available. I sometimes feel awkward talking about my lactose issue. I needn’t have worried here. Nothing seemed to be an issue. Highly recommend this restaurant for quality food and drinks and atmosphere.

French food fabulously done, Well we tried Saturday night but they we're packed so Sunday it was. Well now, what a treat. A beautiful restaurant with a separate section with couches in the bar area. Fabulous wines of normal price, 16quid & upwards. We turned up half hour late but it wasn't an issue and the lovely wsoter brought us our wine as we pondered the menu. I had the coquille St Jack, wife had frogs legs. The scallop with roe was beautifully cooked with small prawns and mussels in a sauce under the mash potatoes. Roasting hot and a fairly massive portion. The frogs legs we're in a gorgeous sauce served with bread. For main I had the venison steak with mushroom & shallots wife had the baked hake in a lemon & butter sauce. Both served with a large broccoli floret and dauphinois potatoes. Well both cooked to perfection with a lovely al dente broccoli. Roasting hot. I didn't even have to ask how I wanted the venison, it came medium rare and so juicy. I had a large glass of Shiraz to go with it. The steak was massive around 12 to 14 oz so as big as a large pub steak. It was also from wild venison in France!!! Toilets spotlessly clean, good atmosphere and very friendly staff. The chef is French with English wife in the kitchen. Alfie was a fab waiter too. A fantastic meal that left us both full. A fab value at 68 quid for the two starters, mains, bottle of white and large red. We will definitely revisit and highly recommend. The best...

Waited 1h30min for our food. Okay food but for this price expected much better, had to ask for water more times.

In response to the reply below:

As you mentioned yourself, we made 4 orders because we are from different households and have different preferences hence I do not see anything questionable with each of stating our opinions separately. Everyone who left a review did indeed eat in your restaurant and has a right to state their opinion.

I did not object to having to order drinks at the bar. My objection was having to ask for water several times.

Our recollections about the waiting time clearly diverge, we can agree to disagree. We also do not recall being told there would be a long waiting time.

To be more precise about the food criticism, the snails were burnt and everything was under-seasoned, the vegi burger was underwhelming. Given the prices, we really expected fine dinning quality and were left quite unimpressed.

That being said, it really felt like a crowded night and I can understand it might have been outside the staffs’ capacity to offer us the quality one would expect from a restaurant with such high reviews. However, I think it would have been more reasonable to let us know you are fully booked and cannot accommodate us.

Nevertheless, even though our experience was negative, I hope others will have a...
