Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby!! Hostess with the mostess. From the moment she called me to tell me I got through the waitlist to the very end, she was perfect and made the experience and 100% has contributed to my 5 star review. Food:
Canapés - 8/10. The Mackerel was a 10, wafer thin pastry, beautifully crisp and very well rounded flavours. A delight in the mouth. The pork belly was very average, there wasn't much flavour and the skin was chewy. Plum dish had good flavour.
9.5/10 - Brixham Crab, Exmoor Caviar & Coconut Ash Cracker This was incredible, the crab was so fresh but the caviar was what made it. Lost half a point because I felt there was a very slight lack of depth, couldn't put my finger on what it was.
11/10 - King Oyster Mushroom, Jungle Curry & Brioche I never thought I would rate a vegetarian dish this highly. Wow is all I can say, I'm still thinking about it a week later and this is the dish I would specifically go back for. The mushroom was like a scallop, the curry packed a punch and was fearless with flavour and the brioche, well who doesn't love brioche - mostly all tastes the same to me but this was baked to perfection. My favourite dish of the year.
7/10 - British Octopus, Chilli Jam & Courgette I have mixed feelings about this dish. It was all going so well until I got the octopus and needed an electric saw to cut through it. I sent it back and after a very apologetic Ruby I quickly got a fresh one and it was a like a different dish. Lovely this time round but indeible octopus is one of those things that can put you off your entire meal if you know what I mean. It's a textural thing.
7.5/10 - Fosse Meadows Chicken, Long Pepper Green Curry I'm not sure about this dish, it was nice but the flavour started to feel a bit samey with the rest of the dishes. Also the food is rich, I don't think there needs to be so many dishes on the tasting menu, or reduce the portion sizes. I was full and struggled to get through this one but it was nice.
10/10 - Cherry, Roselle Hibiscus & Heritage Seed Krayasat A relief to have something fresh, I really wasn't expecting this to be my second favourite dish. I can't even explain how good it was.
9/10 - Apple, Thai Tea & Cassia Similar to the chicken this was just too much, too much food, too rich to finish an already very rich meal. Don't get me wrong it was delicious but there was no way I could enjoy it after all that rich food.
Overall Food: 9.5
Wine Pairings: 7.5. I don't remember the last time I had wine pairings that were only 75ml, I felt a little ripped off because the entire list was also very young (2023+). They should offer another level of pairing, many restaurants do this and I think it's good to have something for those more enthusiastic about wine and willing to pay a bit more. That said, apart from the first two pairings, the rest worked well.
Negroni 10/10
Service: 10/10
To conclude, you must go! Very happy to see Michelin finally awarding true flavour, Anglo Thai did not hold back...
Read moreThe restaurant is marked by a distinctive purple awning outside, setting the tone for its stylish interior. It would be described a Thai food with a twist with local ingredients. The twist is the use of western ingredients/ flavours such as sea buckthorn, brioche, artichoke, wild garlic, venison, oats and rhubarb to name a few.
Inside, Art Deco-style lighting complements the window-side high tables. The decor features metal plates on the walls, circular tables, and noise reduction panels on the ceiling, with some greenery in the corners. Wood paneling, painted in an off-white beach-hut style, adds warmth, while two-tone tables, wooden chairs, and banquette seating line one side of the space.
The atmosphere is lively, with the sounds of the kitchen filtering into the dining area. The staff were friendly and attentive throughout the meal.
The five-course lunch menu priced at£55 excludes two supplementary dishes: a crab, caviar, and cracker dish (£35) which comes in the bite section and a pre-dessert palate cleanser (£7).
A small serving as an Amouse bouche of Tom Yum broth—spicy, rich, and deeply flavored, with a Southern Thai-style turmeric chicken broth.
The bites of Red Curry Tempura, Banana Pepper & Yellow Soybean – A crisp, well-fried tempura with green pepper and stuffed venison, carrying a strong lemongrass flavor. The soybean sauce was quite tangy. The second bite of Carlingford Oyster, Sea Buckthorn & Fermented Chilli – Reminiscent of a chili-spiked Bloody Mary, but the sauce overpowered the delicate oyster.
Starters of Beef Cheek, Makrut Lime Curry & Brioche – A take on beef rendang, more rich than spicy. The sweetness balanced well with the incredibly tender meat, which fell apart effortlessly. The brioche was an excellent addition.
Second starter of Jerusalem Artichoke, Sunflower Seed & Wild Garlic – A play on peanut satay with two key highlights: the sweet artichoke and the wild garlic sauce. However, the dish was slightly unbalanced—too many nuts on top overwhelmed the artichoke, and the peanut sauce was overly sweet, distracting from the artichoke purée. the mains of Blythburgh Pork, Scallop Roe & Smoked Chilli Relish – Served as three components: oats (a bland rice substitute), a beautifully presented salad (pomelo, lemongrass, cabbage, tapioca chips, and grilled artichoke), and the main plate. The pork was outstanding—perfectly grilled with a pink center and crackling that paired beautifully with the intensely flavorful smoked chili relish.
The desert of Rhubarb, White Cardamom & Coconut – A well-balanced combination of tart rhubarb compote, fragrant cardamom, and smooth coconut ice cream. The rhubarb jus added a pleasant sharpness.
A very satisfying meal—definitely filling, even without the supplements. While additional courses could be tempting, they might push the experience into being too much.
At £55 for a five-course Michelin-starred lunch, it offers great value, even with the optional extras and there is a...
Read moreThai food is one of my favorites and I spent a lot of time in Thailand and I love a restaurant with a twist, but I was disappointed.
The Good: Lovely restaurant, beautiful and cozy, perfectly spaced out and just stunning. The staff is very attentive, friendly, professional and caring. The presentation of the dishes is STUNNING and although it is a tasting menu, you get the menu at the beginning and can swap some dishes, if you wanted to. I swapped my beef tongue to the pescatarian option for example. Every dish was explained by the staff thoroughly and added a ice touch
The Bad: we had still water (I thought tab water) with our wine, which was regularly filled up by the attentive staff, however, we ended up paying £8 for 2 x still water (but we never 'ordered' it) so that was a cheeky and unpleasant surprise. I am also not a fan of a 15%! eservice charge.... it is just too much and unreasonable. The wine (red wine) was freezing cold (and it wasn't meant to) and not great. My coat wasn't taken off of me and I just had to leave it on the chair (at this level of restaurant, I expect more)
The Food: As mentioned, each dish looked beautiful and I appreciated the pace of it coming out, not rushed or too slow, not easy to achieve. The broth you get at the beginning was OK but too strong on the shrimp paste and that was a motto that followed through the evening, there was always a taste that was way too powerful and killed the finesse of each dish. The snack platter was nice, the chicken and beetroot were my highlight (nothing knocked me off the chair though) The Brixham Crab, Exmoor Caviar & Coconut Ash Cracker looked unbelievable but the crab was drowned in what I believe is mayo, so it just overpowered the taste again.... I was very excited about the White Asparagus, Caramelised Coconut Cream & Cuttlefish and the waitress told us about all the things in this dish but you tasted NOTHING BUT shrimp paste again. Quite frankly, I couldn't eat it, neither could my friend. The texture, even look and mainly flavour was off-putting. The jungle curry was nice and the sweet brioche a nice twist The lamb was very nice and funny enough, for someone who has no sweet tooth, the last two dishes were almost my favorite BECAUSE of the finesse. There was so much flavour, freshness, twists and it was an explosion in my mouth and what I was hoping for the entire menu.
Overall, we paid £322 for 2 ppl which included 2 tasting menus and 500ml of red wine. The food was not good enough for me to pay that. And I was missing quite a...
