I have just had the pleasure of dining at 20 Berkeley Street and wow did it impress!
I went with my friend and upon walking in it was clear we were in for a treat - this place is a real feast for the senses. The decor and lighting can best be described as exquisite: they create a wonderfully convivial mood whilst maintaining an effortless elegance.
We weren’t seated in The Orange Room but we were able to have a peek inside while the staff took our bags and it was gorgeous! We were taken down to the bar for some pre-dinner drinks; neither of us drink alcohol, so we were presented with the ‘mocktail’ options. I ordered a mock-mojito and I was surprised by how good it was, the citrusy and herby notes complementing the sweetness and gentle kick of the ginger beer base flavour.
Upon being shown to our table, we were able to check out the menu. The theme is very much modern British, with every effort being made to source high-quality British produce.
Food-wise, it all started with a bang when we were presented with the honey glazed dinner rolls and accompanying marmite butter. These rolls are to DIE for, soft parcels of fluffy, bready wonder - if heaven could be baked into bread form, then these rolls would be it! They were so good, I seriously considered ordering another round of them. The marmite butter was the perfect accompaniment, but then I like marmite! I also appreciated how this dish was effective in setting the ‘British’ theme.
The quality continued with my starter proper: I had ordered the special, scallops draped with a small slice of ham and accompanied by a black pudding pasta parcel and wild garlic veloute. I had to pace myself as it was quite a small dish but super tasty, so I made sure I savoured every bite. I kind of wish it was on the regular menu and not just a special as I would definitely order it again.
For my main I ordered rib-eye steak, whilst my friend ordered the Shropshire Iberico pork, and we shared sides of patatas bravas, grilled courgettes and farm greens. The steak was tender and succulent, but I think my mate’s pork dish was even better (he let me try some): the sweet onions and mushrooms were gloriously flavoursome. The veggies were tasty - I wish I could cook courgettes as perfectly as these - but the patatas bravas were on another level, simply out of this world: almost like tender, chunky chips, fried to a golden crisp. With both the bread, and these patatas, it is clear this place has perfected carbs!
For dessert we shared the chocolate and hazel tart and the tarte tartin. I am a chocolate fiend so I naturally loved the chocolate dessert but the tarte tatin impressed with the soft mellowness of its apples and the comforting refinement of its pastry.
The food won me over but I was also impressed by the staff, who were both friendly and attentive without being rigid or stuffy.
This place is a winner and I can’t wait to come back to try some of the other menu options - the porterhouse steak looks intriguing, as do some of the seafood dishes. And of course, next time I simply must have more of the dinner rolls and...
