We visited Korean BBQ Canary Wharf for my birthday, a surprise celebration organised by my family. There were six of us - four adults, a child, and a toddler. We were so excited to try Korean BBQ for the first time, especially at a fully halal restaurant with such good reviews. It felt like the perfect place for a special occasion and something different for us all to enjoy.
Unfortunately, what started as a lovely evening turned into a nightmare. On the way home, my toddler suddenly projectile vomited all over the car. At first, we thought it was just a random coincidence - maybe motion sickness or a bug. But about 24 hours later, I was hit with an overwhelming wave of nausea, followed by vomiting. Not long after, my husband started experiencing the same - severe vomiting and diarrhoea. We checked in with the other two adults in our party, and they confirmed they’d gone through the exact same thing at around the same time.
For the next 24 hours, five out of six of us were extremely unwell. We were dealing with intense stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. It completely wiped us out. We’d planned to travel for the Christmas holidays, but we were too sick to move and had to cancel everything. What was supposed to be a fun and memorable birthday celebration turned into a disaster.
I reached out to the restaurant, thinking they’d want to know and would take this seriously. Instead, their response felt cold and dismissive. They said they couldn’t do anything unless we provided a medical report to “prove” the food caused the illness. How on earth were we supposed to do that?! This all happened over the Christmas bank holiday, and while we were very unwell, it wasn’t a medical emergency - we didn’t feel the need to rush to A&E. The GP wasn’t open, and even if it were, food poisoning isn’t something that’s always formally diagnosed unless it’s severe enough to warrant hospitalisation.
What made it worse was that every email I received felt like a generic copy-and-paste response, with no empathy or genuine concern for what we went through. Their unwillingness to take any responsibility, even after hearing that five people from two different households were affected, was incredibly frustrating.
We spent a lot of money on this meal, and I was so excited for what should have been a special birthday celebration. Instead, it was ruined - not just the meal, but the days that followed, too. We were left feeling sick, stressed, and dismissed.
I don’t like writing reviews like this, but I feel it’s important to warn others. Food poisoning is a real risk here, and if something does go wrong, don’t expect the restaurant to take responsibility. I wouldn’t want anyone else to go through...
Read moreAte here for the 1st time tonight and I can safely say it was out of this world. From the moment you see the place you get a good feeling, the outdoor planters and flowers are well kept and make the right welcoming impression. When you walk into the restaurant there is a great atmosphere and we were greeted by very happy and smiling staff.
The menu choices and the way the BBQ meats work were explained clearly. The choice is extensive. As a meat lover you can tell that the menu has been selected from the best cuts. There were some on here which I had not heard of.
For starters we went for a mixture, the stand out dishes were Toppokki and the Takoyaki. The food was served in the perfect time from the order and arrived freshly cooked and piping hot. A special mention also needs to go for the Korean Fried Chicken, the size of the chicken was unbelievable and the rubs and sauces of equal quality.
For the main we went for a selection of the mix bbq meats, Ribeye, Kalbi, Sirloin and Bulgogi. As we were a party of 4 we also got the Wagyu. The meat is of an unbelievable quality and the cuts exquisite, it looks exactly like the photos, and you can tell it is good because of the way it cooks on the grill. The 1st bite of ribeye, was something I was not expecting, the flavour was so full and it had a melt in the mouth texture. The mushroom and lettuce which came up adds a nice touch, the as you cook the mushrooms on the grill too, they absorb all of the juices and flavour as well from the meat. The quantities are huge.
The staff were attentive and made you feel very at ease during the dining experience.
For desert (those who had room) we had a the bingsu, which for me finished off the meal perfectly as I have a sweet tooth. The sweetness is just the right amount and the ice cream is to die for.
Overall we had an amazing experience and will be looking to book again in the very near future. This is a real hidden...
Read moreFar away from authentic Korean Restaurant
We visited this restaurant today and were taken aback by the overpriced menu and limited selection of dishes. Charging £17 for bulgogi bibimbap and £10 for kimchi jeon is excessive, even for Canary Wharf. We decided to leave after the unprofessional staff informed us that many menu items were unavailable. Nearly everything that resembled authentic Korean cuisine was sold out.
I've dined at numerous Korean restaurants but have never encountered chicken bibimbap before. Additionally, the absence of alcohol on the menu raises further doubts about the authenticity of the establishment and its management.
For genuine Korean food, I recommend heading further south on the Isle of Dogs to 3Kobros where you can enjoy a truly authentic dining experience.
After reading the answer of the owner:
Even if you go to central i.e. pochawa grill you pay 13.5 for bibimbap or let’s go one level up to koba in Fitzrovia we normally go after work you pay £11.90 for a beef bibimbap. Really not worth the price as it is only canary wharf (btw I am living here and was hoping for some new GOOD restaurant).
3Kobros is not a take-out and has more than 4 tables, not sure when you have been there the last time. Prices are on a different level even though they are not at the river side. Who cares about river view if you cannot see the Thames.
A l proper river side restaurant for me ate the one’s which have a nice terrace i.e royal china where you can truly enjoy the view.
I am ok with serving no alcohol when I go to a proper middle eastern restaurant i.e. in mayfair but please do not call this restaurant Korean. K BBQ and soju/beer belongs together!!
I will not remove this review as I truly believe that others should be aware before they go to the restaurant. Furthermore, I was reading your reviews in your branch in barbican, and it seems to be you having the...
