We ate here pre-theatre. Booked for 5.15pm and were able to enjoy a leisurely meal leaving around 6.30 in perfect time to head over to the theatre - didn't feel rushed to leave or anything. It's pretty cosy but we had a table for 2 just by the bar so weren't surrounded on all sides!
For starters we ordered a sharing platter for 2 which had chicken satay, pork skewers, prawn crackers and spring rolls with a range of dips. Really delicious - the pork skewers a particularly enjoyable surprise as the pork was super tender and the tamarind sauce perfectly balanced. The chicken satay was also great, tasty and not at all dry as some chicken skewers can be. I did feel the portion was a little light considering it was £14 for two servings and there was just one of each thing per person, but in hindsight probably sensible given the main course to come!
For mains we ordered a noodle dish each (chicken pad thai for me, prawn drunken noodles for OH) and we shared a plate of stir-fried aubergine. These servings were generous and my pad thai was delicious, just what I wanted. OH's drunken noodles were also lovely and the prawns were good. The aubergine was a total star though - soft, silky and beautifully cooked, with the most amazing powerful sauce. It was really rich so glad we shared it!
We had a bottle of the house white to go with which was lovely, light and fruity and went perfectly with the food.
Food came out really promptly which is perfect for a pre-theatre meal, but as I say we didn't feel at all rushed and were able to finish our wine and relax a bit before heading off.
They were fully booked and turning away walk-ins so I do recommend booking for a pre-theatre meal - easy to do on their website. Also service charge is automatically added to your bill - just something to be aware of. For 2 (possibly 2.5?!) courses and wine our meal was £75 including tip - more than we'd usually pay but totally reasonable for London theatreland food of...
Read moreWilton Street is what I call a rather uninspiring street in Victoria. However, the restaurant Rosa’s Thai Café is usually crowded so I decided to give it a try. It's not the normal sort of Thai one finds in London. Clearly it has been catered for a Western palate where some of the quirkier aspects of Thai cuisine are missing, and the chilli impact rather lacking, but when it is going to taste good, who cares? A somewhat small menu can usually be taken as a positive sign.
However, this was not the case when my Prawn Red Curry Paste Stir Fry which I opted for with Coconut rice, instead of Mixed Jasmine & Brown Rice (£7.50) arrived. The Coconut rice tasted overly sweet rather than tasting of coconut - a tin of coconut cream had literally been poured over it. As for the curry, it lacked the ‘in-your-face’ aromatic qualities I was hoping for.
For dessert, the Coconut Ice Cream which I ordered upon recommendation by their waitress tasted like eating dish soap. The Mango Sticky Rice, which is one of my favourite dessert treats I order whenever I can in Thai restaurants and usually turns me into an addict by the end of the meal, needed far more salty-sweet seasoning. The Coconut Sticky rice which is made to complement the mango and not the other way round lacked the correct consistency. Overall the service was average – the staff were not rude but not very friendly either.
Rosa’s Thai which is part of a chain with branches in Spitalfields, Angel and Soho do offer reasonable prices with noodles and main dishes all under £10.00. The location means it has the potential to attract both tourists and office workers who are likely to be time constrained. However from this experience, I couldn’t possibly recommend it as a...
Read moreNot the best experience here - largely due to the really inattentive service we experienced. The tables are really packed in tightly together so it’s really difficult to slide between the tables to get into the seat/bench behind without getting caught up in the neighbouring table’s food.
We had our order taken pretty quickly which was good, drinks brought etc, and following that we were promptly forgotten about. We were desperate for more drinks, more water, and despite waving and trying to catch their eye (there were plenty of servers) no one attended to us, or came to check on us. One waiter even came round with a jug of water to refill people’s glasses, but avoided half the room and didn’t even cast an eye around.
We asked someone for the bill at the end, which never arrived, despite other tables getting their bills and paying up. It was impossible to catch anyone’s attention, which is really poor service from the staff and creates an infuriating experience as a customer.
The corner door (which looks like the main entrance from the street) isn’t accessible to new-arrivals, and subsequently one couple who were positioned inside, by the corner door, spent their entire meal trying to direct people desperately trying to open the corner door, around the side of the building. I’m baffled as to why there wasn’t a sign on the door, as this particular couple would have had a completely restless and unsettling meal.
The food is good - relatively generous portions and fresh flavours and ingredients. We both enjoyed the Thai green curry which certainly has a kick. Shame about...
