I have eaten at Shoryu Ramen many times before and always enjoyed their ramen. Therefore, I was intrigued when I found out they were introducing a new breakfast menu exclusively at their Covent Garden location. It was my first time there and I had a great experience.
What is great about the breakfast menu is that it includes dishes influenced by Japanese tradition and others for a more Western taste. There are also savoury and sweet items for you to choose from.
I was looking forward to the things I had not had since leaving Japan. Firstly, I had Ochazuke (お茶漬け) which is a type of Japanese comfort food. It is made from cooked rice soaked with green tea and various toppings added on top. I had salmon and seaweed flakes with mine and the salmon was cooked perfectly.
I then had Mazemen (まぜ麺) which is soupless ramen with raw egg yolk, pork belly and various toppings. Instead of broth or soup, you mix the uncooked ramen noodles with the egg yolk and toppings. This was my favourite, because it was so filling.
Of course, I had to have dessert and I chose the Chicken Kara-age Waffle with fruit and maple syrup. Kara-age and maple syrup may sound like a strange combination, but the contrast between the soy marinated chicken and sweet maple syrup was really nice.
Even the drinks were delicious. I had a strawberry matcha latte and a kinako (roasted soybean) latte. I particularly liked the kinako latte, which is difficult to find in London and had a nutty flavour.
The customer service was also excellent. I was served by Suraj who was polite and professional but also friendly. He checked in with me several times while I was eating, but was never intrusive. I also spoke to the manager and we had an interesting conversation about the new menu and Japanese food in general.
The restaurant itself was very clean and well maintained with plenty of comfortable seating. The interior is influenced by Japanese design without being over the top or tacky.
I definitely recommend the breakfast menu at Shoryu Ramen Covent Garden if you fancy trying Japanese breakfast dishes or just something different with a Japanese influence. You will not be...
Read moreWe visited on their soft opening with 50% off on their ramen. We finally got our table after almost an hour wait. The staff were friendly but the service was ok.
We ordered: Wagyu Bun- Sadly though, there was just not enough of the beef inside out bun. We also felt it was a little overcooked. Having said that, the other ingredients accompanying the beef were more interesting.
Hakata Tetsunabe Gyoza- The gyozas were served on a cast-iron skillet and had a side dipping sauce of soy and wasabi. The pork was tender and you could taste the freshness of the ingredients used. The flavours could've been bolder but overall the gyozas weren't bad and were worth the try.
Shoryu Ganso Tonkotsu- their signature tonkotsu ramen. heir rich pork broth is creamy and packed with flavours. The pork itself was thinly sliced and it was so tender that hardly any effort was needed to chew it. The toppings included nitamago egg, kikurage mushrooms, spring onion, sesame, ginger, nori seaweed. So good!
Curry Ramen - this ramen was an absolute joy to eat. It had the creaminess and thick consistency of the pork broth that Shoryu prides themselves in, yet still maintaining the rich flavours and spice of a Japanese curry. The chicken karaage pieces were a little dry, but once soaked up in the curry broth, it was really tender and flavourful. A must try if you come to Shoryu
We ended our meal with Matcha Azuki Rolled Cake. As Matcha Fans, we love the bittersweet taste of the Matcha, but sadly we could not taste any Matcha-ness other than the dusting from the matcha powder. The filling inside was like a buttercream with sweet red beans mixed in. Not impressed.
Overall we really like our ramen than their starters and dessert. We might give higher score if we were there for...
Read moreMy husband and I decided to try this place before a show and gave ourselves plenty of time to enjoy a leisurely meal. We ordered our bowls and two buns (for their bun Monday special) not long after we were sat. The couple next to us who ordered a few minutes after us were done with their meals and had paid and we still had not received any food. At this point we were beginning to become bothered as the waiter only offered the standard, your food should be coming at any moment (spoiler alert: it didn’t). Then there was a glimmer of hope; a plate of buns heading our way…except they went to the couple that arrived at least a half hour after us and then they received their ramen a few moments later…must be nice. At this point we were ready to leave and then our buns FINALLY arrived.. and they brought us the wrong order. We immediately notified the person who brought it (the manager) and he said “no they’re right”. I corrected him and said no, we got 1 chicken and 1 bbq, not the 2 bbq they brought us. They almost immediately brought back the correct order. It was actually cold but we scarfed them down like feral cats who finally received a meal after not eating for days. This satiated us for a while longer but still no ramen. After waiting 50 MINUTES from the time we ordered, we had to leave in order to make it to the show, so we went to the counter and said we would pay for what we had and after a grumbling apology and a correction of the price of the buns (it was their special after all) we left and stopped at the nearby Doughnut Time and had doughnuts for dinner…and they were amazing, so skip this joke of a place and just have doughnuts from...
