🚇Aldgate East 🍺 £6.20 Guinness
The Dog is located in an atmospheric backstreet in Whitechapel, close to Wilton’s Music Hall. The nearest Tube is Aldgate East, it’s a ten minute walk to get here.
The original pub on this site was The Dog & Truck, it was built in 1869 and rebuilt in its present form in 1935. After a period of closure, the pub reopened in February 2024 and renamed The Dog. This pub is run by Feeney's Irish Pub Company who have two superb establishments close to Fenchurch Street Station.
This is long one bar pub that is traditionally decorated. The servery stretches down the length of the bar and has a solid wood counter. Around the walls are a number of screens for live sport plus a few framed prints of how to use the Irish language. This pub boasts two beer gardens, both have TV screens, the one on the right has the old Watney’s sign attached to the wall.
The beer selection comprised of familiar favourites, two in-house beers plus rakes of Guinness. This being an Irish owned pub, a Guinness was the order of the day. My pint was thoroughly enjoyable, price point was a smidge above average.
I arrived just before 3pm on a sunny Saturday afternoon in March. The pub was fairly quiet with a few different groups dotted around in the gardens and bar. The atmosphere was relaxed with horse racing on some screens and footy on others, a proper Saturday afternoon set up. The service was great, I had a top chat with one of the team about the pub and other pubs we had both frequented.
@thedog.e1 was a fantastic visit. I loved the traditional pub vibes, engaging team and well kept Guinness. This pub will appeal to sports fans and those who just want a no gimmicks honest pub experience.

Draughts occasionally change, but you're likely to see the likes of Lagunitas, Meantime, Birra Moretti, Heineken, Guinness, Doombar, amongst a fair few others. Two enclosed garden areas, aren't blessed with much sunlight but are still wonderful on a warm summer evening. The owner is a B.F.G. Spurs fan, which might be a positive or a negative depending on your football-orientation. Weekly quizzes on Wednesdays are home-made, styled as Bingo, and always good fun. Menu mains are restricted to (Pieminister) pies, with some sides available, which is a shame - but then, the pub isn't big enough to house a full-sized kitchen. Despite that, though, it's a great place to...
Read moreI booked a table for Tuesday quiz night by e-mail, specifically asking for a table for “Quiz Night” and they replied to me that “it’s all sorted out”. But when we get there on the day, they said that the pub quiz was cancelled. They should have told me that beforehand so that we could go to a different pub because I’ve planned a pub quiz for catching up with my friends. My friends came to Aldgate all the way from Essex so we felt our night was somewhat ruined!! But they could only say “it’s been cancelled last minutes”. They should have offered us a free drink or something. We’ve asked why it’s cancelled but they didn’t answer with any clear reason. I really disappointed how...
