Popped in for a quick pint on the way to a client's house (I needed a pee).
It was a Saturday lunch time. There were about four other customers in the pub.
I pulled out my laptop to catch up on some emails and a polite but apologetic member of staff told me that Samuel Smith pubs have banned customers from using phones, tablets and laptops.
Apparently using a phone to pay for your drinks is OK though, as is their use of computer based point of sales terminals, IP based cameras, etc.
Their pub, their rules- fair enough, but don't let suckers walk in, buy an overpriced no name pint of lager and then point to the two A4 laminated posters that are only visible as you leave the pub. (There was another A4 notice behind the bar- unfortunately I was standing at the wrong end of the bar to see it clearly).

Read moreWeird atmosphere for a pub in London during the weekend. Saturday 1pm: There were 4 of us in total ... 5 with the waitress ... absolute silence in the pub, no one spoke, no music, absolute desolation ... A couple of friends came to visit us with their one-year-old daughter (we were happy because we heard at least some voices ...) ... But the waitress invited them to wait for us outside because they could not stay inside with the baby (besides she is the best baby in the world), my friend pointed out that it was cold outside and she told her not to insist or she was forced to call the police. NOW I UNDERSTAND WHY THIS PUB WAS EMPTY ON SATURDAY. Unfortunately not everyone knows how to work in the...
Read moreWe walked into a deserted pub, the garden looked lovely and sunny . After getting menus ourselves, we tried to ask what were soft drinks and was thrust a drinks menu. we ordered sandwiches to be told, we have run out, the pub was empty, I suggested they try the supermarket opposite but apparently that was not an option,. This was at 1pm on Monday! The chicken Caesar salad was limp, mean and sad, with none of the crunch obtained by using romaine lettuce, but when I suggested that the chef was told, the retort was that that was " their take" on a Caesar...... As I work locally I would love to have some decent food in a sunny garden but this establishment is badly run and well below par for the area, what a huge shame and a...
