Top notch food overall, you don’t go to Toby Carvery and then complain that your food wasn’t the quality of a five star restaurant. Toby Carvery produces no nonsense decent quality carveries with an excellent choice of vegetables. I went for the early sitting at midday and was greeted warmly by the staff. Caversham is definitely my favourite location, go there early and you will get the best choice in an uncrowded restaurant. Lots of signs alerting me to register my car registration for the free car park, understandable in view of the location just by the riverside next door. Table as per my request in the online booking was right next to the carvery. The choice was excellent, I went for the king size option since I love a second Yorkshire pudding. The lamb was a bit dry but apart from that, the other meats (I went for a bit of each) were quite nice. Top notch roasties and veggies. I left a bit of space for pudding after the carvery and thanks to the recommendations of the lovely Becky, I opted for the crumble: lovely with lots of fruit and a massive portion with ice cream, easily shareable!

Today I went for lunch at this restaurant alone as my mate was at work . At reception I was told that it’s 30 mins wait or sit at the bar , as I was alone , I said it’s fine . No one told me ,I need to pay at the bar first . I went to the bar and asked the bar tender ,is it sit anywhere ? He said yes ! He didn’t tell me as well that I need to pay first . After that i joined the queue ,after 20 min I manage to get my food and went to the bar section . The girl at the reception checkin said to me very rudely ! Next time you pay first at the bar ! I said excuse me ? Do you think I am going to make a runner ? She was rude and the bartender as-well said I try to tell you !! It was such a racist and rude way ,she said in front of all people . I felt insulted and left leaving my food on the table . I have worked as a deputy GM for whitbread . This was purely no experience staff at the reception . No one said sorry as usual or did anything . Food is great but the customer service is 0 . I will never go again for sure .

Turned up without a reservation and luckily got a table. There was only one waitress serving all tables in one large area so she was really busy so service was a bit slower than usual but not a problem. Food was delicious as always and they had gammon which is one of my favourite roasts so it was brilliant! Now because of COVID the chef has to put everything onto your plate and you're not allowed to help yourself to veg and gravy but it wasn't a problem and the chef was lovely and generous with portion sizes which is always a bonus! The sundae we wanted was out of stock so got the honeycomb sundae instead but it was delicious so it wasn't a hardship at all. I'm a returning customer and will continue to be as food is always delicious and staff are always hard working and friendly!

Went to the Toby Carvery for breakfast with a friend this morning. Food was excellent, with a fantastic choice and range of food and would definitely return if passing. Only bad point had to wait ages at the desk to request a seat while a member of staff was nearby, although she kept looking at me, would not come over. Then when she did she went to the bar and called me over, rather than coming to me, so looses marks for the welcome. So maybe a little need to improve there. Also worth mentioning that there were dirty or stained plates within the clean plate stack, which was a little off putting! No one wants to eat off of a dirty plate. Had to leave them where they were as there were no staff around. (Looking through other reviews it appears this issue has been mentioned before!)

We just got back from Reading festival and Toby Carvery has been a life saver. The staff were absolutely rushed off their feet with hoards of young people coming in from the festival, but we were greeted with smiles, served at the bar super quick, and found tables, due to the efficiency of the staff politely moving people on and clearing down as soon as they finished their meal. On Friday evening we had the famous roast, a big plate of food, served really quickly, at a very reasonable price. And on Saturday morning we went in for breakfast, and again were greeted with lots of smiles and a fast efficient service. The toilet was blocked, but due to the amount of traffic it's hardly surprising. Great job to the team at Toby. Will be back next year. ❤️

I visited Tobey Carvery Reading last month and overall, it was an alright experience. Took a while to get seated as it was a busy Friday evening. We opted for the standard carvery, which was nice. Some parts hot and some warm. It was great to have the choice of so many vegetables, condiments, and gravies. The food itself was okay, nothing particularly outstanding but satisfying. Children liked the food, no complaints. The kids menu does offer choice. The adults menus probably had too much. The staff were helpful and attentive, which added to a pleasant dining experience. The toilets were clean and the eating area met my expectations. Would go again and would recommend.
