This is the kind of restaurant you'll try once, enjoy, and forget about until you read about it closing down in 5 years on Facebook and being like "Oh wow!" This will never be a restaurant you'll go out of your way to eat at, or recommend to your friends. Not out distaste, but because it was nothing special.
Walking in it looks your average local $15-25$ price range restaurant. With NOLA inspired atmosphere. The restaurant looks like it started as someone's restaurant dream and opened with a working class budget. That being said, the main dining room was more or less maintained as was the bar with chalk board menus.
I was greated by the host/waiter all in one combo. The staff can be recognized by their Tasty Tails shirts/pullovers which look like they had some good thought put into them but the rest of the uniform of the collective wait staff looks like there's no uniformity to speak of and they all wear similar dirty white sneakers.
Sitting down I got brought water in a single use plastic cup like you'd get at a dive bar but my order was taken quickly and the service itself was prompt. The menu itself is only available on QR (which I assume is left over from COVID area) but I find is a poor choice even in the age of technology. People like menus. The menu itself is very to the point, which I like. Various Cajun based seafood appetizers, alcoholic beverages, seafood boils at market price, fried seafood, and Cajun pasta which is what I ended up with (what can I say I love bastardization of food).
As I sat and waited I got a real look in detail of the full restaurant where the cracks start to show. Half the light bulbs are out, grime on the stand that holds the menu QR, grime building up on the bases of the tables and chairs, as well as the blinds being crooked and strung up at different angles. When I went to the bathroom, in the hallway there was some random cleaning cart just thrown in the way. The women's restroom was out of order which can just be poor timing. On both restroom doors there was a nightly restroom cleaning log that was not surprisingly blank by the looks at the bathroom which was trashed and looks like was barely maintained either during closing procedures as well as during the day by the staff. This is what we call a "gas station" bathroom. On the way out I noticed an abandoned part of the restaurant that might have been another part of the dining room or a patio long left to dust and used as a storage space which looked a little trashy.
As for the food when I returned to the table, it wasn't bad. I'm not a picky person at all and easy to please, it was a pretty standard Cajun pasta. However, it was served in a single use plastic bowl instead of a ceramic plate like you would expect. The plating itself then looked like something you'd order from a food truck and less something you'd get from a sit down experience.
At the end of the day, the devil is in the details. The restaurant obviously "runs". Someone schedules the people, pays the bills, keeps the dining room clean enough, orders the product, etc. but if there's as much detail paid to the atmosphere and the food as to the rest of the restaurants operation then this will forever be another restaurant with stunted growth due to a leadership team with no...

Read moreI’ve been a loyal customer with Tasty Tails since they were still a small store at the food court location off Legacy, I kept going back because of their Nola style crawfish. I haven’t been back in a while since their Richardson location was closed. Last weekend I suddenly had a craving for their Nola style crawfish again so I decided to drive 30 minutes just to pickup crawfish. The staff told me the crawfish size is small to medium due to the cold weather over the phone, I was fine with it and ordered 1 lb of Nola and 1 lb of Who Dat for togo. I was so excited to eat it by the time I got home…but I was really disappointed. I don’t know if they have changed the Who Dat sauce recipe, it tasted completely different now. I had the who dat sauce in spicy, back then they would use habanero to make it spicy, but this time they loaded the sauce with (probably) cayenne pepper and the sauce tasted so weird, and there was almost no garlic in it at all (back then it was loaded with minced garlic). Nola style was good but it was a little too salty even for me, as someone who loves salt.
But I’m writing this 2-star review not because of the sauce or the saltiness - there were SO.MANY.DEAD.CRAWFISH in the bag!! I only ordered 1 lb each of each flavor, and there were at least 10 dead crawfish in each 1 lb bag. I probably had accidentally eaten the dead ones (with the tiny ones I just ate them whole because the shells were really soft, only realized there were dead ones in the bags when I started peeling some bigger ones and the meat was super mushy.) A few hours later I had to go to the bathroom numerous times because my stomach was acting up. It felt like I had mild food poisoning. That is not cool. I ended up spending hours of my Sunday night sitting on the toilet 🥵
Long story short, I probably won’t go back to Tasty Tails Richardson again. It’s not worth the drive as I have so many other better options around where I live, just really disappointed because I really like...
