Update: I had a mild case of food poisoning. Stomach pains later in the evening and upset stomach throughout the next day.
OK, I usually try to write a fair review and look for the good in the products and services I have tried. However, this is one of the worst sushi places I have been to in quite a long time. The reason I chose this place was because of decent reviews on Yelp and fantastic ratings on Zagat.
So let's at least start with the pros: Fantastic service, so at least the one star and A for effort in presentation and proportion size.
Cons: I had order the chirashi and chicken kare age.
The presentation was great until I started eating it. I usually like to taste the fish before dipping it in sauces but even the sauces didn't help cover the unfresh quality of seafood I had partake in tonight's misadventures. I have been to many other sushi places and different types of fishes have a certain quality and taste due to their freshness. The salmon was tasteless, had a tinge of freezer burn and the texture was very chewy. Next came the sweet shrimp. Sweet shrimps are usually very buttery and are distinct in its taste. The one I had had a very fishy taste to it which covered up that buttery quality. Next came tuna, yellowtail, and albacore in which all had an extreme unfresh fishy taste to them and left a bad taste in my mouth after paying the bill.
As for the chicken kare age, they looked like poorly battered frozen chicken strips. It tasted like it has been refried twice straight out from the freezer and had the texture and consistency of jerky. I have ordered a good amount of chicken kare age in the past at other Japanese restaurants and they did not look anything like what I had ordered from this place.
Bottom line is that for the price I paid for the meal and quality of the food, I highly recommend not coming...
Read moreStepping into Maki & Sushi felt very welcoming. From the moment we were greeted by the genuinely friendly staff, the atmosphere was warm and comfortable. The newly updated interior with soft lighting, comfortable seating, and the gentle murmur of happy diners created a truly welcoming ambiance. We started with the sashimi omakase. It was delicate, light, but flavorful made with fresh ingredients. Next we had the sushi omakase with fresh ground wasabi (highly recommend this) and miso soup. My husband added sweet shrimp sushi and wagyu sushi at the end to finish our meal and it was so delicious! They deep fry the sweet shrimp head crispy to have, if you like. The portion sizes were generous without being overwhelming, and each dish was beautifully presented. Our server, Dylon, was attentive, knowledgeable, and always ready with a smile. He made us feel like valued guests and offered helpful recommendations without being pushy. The entire team was wonderful and gave us a super comfortable dining experience. And let's not forget the dessert! We shared the green tea mochi ice cream. Just a sweet bite to end a fantastic meal. The Maki & Sushi isn't just a neighborhood restaurant for locals. It's the kind of place you want to return to again and again, whether for a special occasion or a casual weeknight dinner. With its delicious food, warm atmosphere, and attentive service, Maki and Sushi has earned a special place in our hearts (and stomachs!). Highly...
Read moreIt was a Saturday and we wanted to take advantage of sushi lunch specials. Did a quick search on Yelp and decided to give Maki & Sushi a try in Arcadia. Its located in a big plaza so there was plenty of parking. We opted to sit outside. We were given menus and unfortunately, lunch is only served Monday to Friday. Bummer. But since we were able there we stayed.
We ended up ordering the spicy sashimi bibimbap and the Sashimi & Sushi combo. Both came with complimentary miso soup. I thought the soup was a bit on the salty side. My sashimi & sushi combo arrived first. It came with a salad (which I opted for ginger dressing) which was very yummy and refreshing. I got 10 pieces of sashimi that consisted of salmon, tuna, escolar, yellowtail and albacore (2 pc each) and 5 pieces of nigiri sushi of the same fish plus a bowl of rice. The sashimi and sushi was just ok, a bit on the fishy side. The spicy sashimi bibimbap was huge has lots of cubed fish pieces, spring salad mix, rice, gochuchang. Felt like it was missing something so we asked for some sesame oil which did the trick for the taste. The fish was a bit on the warm side though. Huge portion so that couldn't finish it so we asked for a box and a bag of ice (since we weren't going straight home). They were reluctant to provide the ice first but ultimately came back with a bag of ice which was nice of them. Prices were reasonable for sushi. Service was good. Our waitress came over a few times to...
