Restaurant should be called "Overpriced Micro Sushi Room". For perspective, I've enjoyed sushi at nearly every establishment in Atlanta, numerous states and many countries. The reviews made this sound amazing with big portions and that you are "lucky" if you can get a reservation. The reality is exactly the opposite. I think this establishment is possibly a social experiment to see if marketing and fake reviews can make people pay exorbitant amounts for tiny low quality sushi. The owners must be laughing their way to the bank every night.
Open table requires a credit card for reservation, but I was able to book 1 day before prime time reservation on a busy beautiful Saturday night when West Midtown was packed, between 7:30-9:30pm the place never got more than half full. Even with our reservation, the host tried to sit us in a side room because they were "so booked up"...the side room is accessed by walking out the front door and down the walk a ways where you enter an area with absolutely no ambiance (kind of like a large former storage room) not in any way connected to the main dining area. I informed the host that this was not acceptable, so we were seated in the main area. Of course the main area never exceeded 50% capacity, so not sure why he tried to push us into the closet.
FOOD: Sushi was literally micro sushi, all the food sets a worldwide standard for the smallest, least amount of fish you get. Fish quality is below average for Atlanta area. Appetizer sashimi was literally 8 flakes of fish (best way to describe it as they were 1/4 inch wide and 1" long and 1/16" inch thick) not very good. We ordered several orders of Nigiri, but sadly the fish on each were 2 1/4" long and less than 1/8" thick (thinnest I have ever experienced). Even worse, we ordered a couple orders of Hamachi nigiri. They cooked the tiny thin scraps of Hamachi and put it on the rice. They added lemon twists on top to try to make it edible. it must have been so old that the only way they could serve it was to cook it. Disgusting to say the least. Hamachi is normally one of the best, most buttery fresh fishes you can have, there is never a valid reason to cook it for nigiri. Ordered a Lobster Roll and it was tiny. Diameter of the roll was just larger than the diameter of a quarter with 8 tiny pieces each 1/2" wide for $29. DRINKS: We tried 3 mixed drinks. They were all tasty and well made, but very small.
On the positive side: There is very nice decor and ambiance in the main dining room. SUMMARY: Spent $300 for dinner for 2 and left totally dissatisfied with the food flavor and portion size. We agreed that of hundreds of sushi experiences, we would rate this the worst quality and value of sushi we have experienced...
Read moreThis place just misses the mark!! The aesthetic is pretty and very well done. When you first walk in there are four two top tables to your left by the bar, we were seated at one in between two other couples. The tables are extremely close together! Felt on top of the people next to us and could hear every single part of their conversations the whole evening. The tables are so close together that the server has to come over your shoulder from behind you. Not really ideal for a date night.
Overall the sushi rolls were just disappointing and lack luster. We got the eel roll and negi salmon roll. The eel was good but nothing spectacular. The negi roll is just your average rainbow roll, something you can find everywhere and nothing really distinctive about it. Very basic!
On top of the sushi rolls, we got the tuna tasting. The otoro was fabulous! Melted in your mouth, super fresh great quality. Definitely best part of the meal.
The spicy crispy tuna roll was great! Rice was nice and crispy at the bottom, tuna was fresh, a little spicy and not overly chopped together. The menu says there is arugula and ponzu and that was nowhere to be found. Still good though but little misleadingly it’s also not a roll, just call it spicy crispy tuna!
Aside from all the sushi we got the shishito peppers, perfectly grilled, super flavorful, little spice.
Overall I wouldn’t come back for the rolls. They are more generic than Oku that’s become a chain down the street! Super basic rolls, nothing special about them, not impressed with the quality, small in size and overpriced for what they are. Would come back for the...
Read moreI had been to the restaurant two previous occasions and had a really great experience- the food and service were top notch. On my most recent experience I wanted to bring a friend from out of town after raving to him about how much he would enjoy the ambience and food. We showed up at 9pm on the dot for our reservation- the host seemed frantic and distracted- walking away from the host stand multiple times after asking my name and still not seating us. Finally after asking my name a 3rd time he finally said follow me and proceeded to exit the main dining area and direct us to a completely separate space. I knew right away that the vibe was totally different and it felt like a cheapened experience and atmosphere. We were sat next to a couple who thought it would be a good idea to bring a baby and a toddler to a sushi restaurant on a Saturday evening at 9pm. The server- although very friendly- was overwhelmed, inexperienced, and forgot several very simple requests, leaving us hanging during the meal. The wrong items were brought to the table several times, interrupting our conversation as they tried to auction the food/drinks off. The meal was sub par- was nowhere near the quality or flavor profile from previous visits. For the price point, I’d say this was probably my last visit to the Kenjo room. There’s better sushi for...
