Austin Bar Hopping Guide (Part 2)

I recently had the pleasure of checking out DuMont's Down Low, and let me tell you, I absolutely fell in love with this place! The atmosphere was incredibly chill and inviting, creating the perfect setting to kick back, relax, and enjoy some fantastic cocktails. From the moment I stepped through the door, I immediately felt at ease, thanks to the cozy vibes and the friendly staff. Let's talk about those cocktails, shall we? DuMont's Down Low really impressed me with their drink selection. Not only were the cocktails incredibly tasty, but they were also reasonably priced. It's such a relief to find a spot that offers top-notch libations without making my wallet cry. Whether you're a fan of classic concoctions or prefer more innovative and adventurous mixes, their menu had something to satisfy every palate. I personally loved their expertly crafted cocktails that perfectly balanced flavors and were presented with flair. The staff at DuMont's Down Low were simply fantastic. They were attentive, knowledgeable, and more than happy to provide recommendations or customize drinks based on individual preferences. Their friendly and approachable demeanor added an extra touch of warmth to the whole experience. One thing that really stood out to me was the incredible value for money. DuMont's Down Low managed to hit the sweet spot by offering high-quality drinks, a comfortable ambiance, and affordable prices. It's not always easy to find a place that ticks all these boxes, but this gem of a spot does it effortlessly. In a nutshell, I can't recommend DuMont's Down Low enough. The laid-back atmosphere, superb cocktails, and wallet-friendly prices make it a standout choice for a memorable night out. Whether you're planning a relaxed get-together with friends or a cozy date night, DuMont's Down Low is sure to exceed your expectations. I, for one, can't wait to go back and explore more of their amazing cocktail offerings.

Rating: 3.4/5 This spot has a rustic, underground winery-bar vibe, which was nice, though I wasn’t a fan of the eerie photo decor. We visited on a weekday when it wasn’t busy, so we easily found a seat and ordered right away. The cocktail menu featured unique ingredients that caught our attention, so we decided to try their spring offerings, planning to return for the regular menu later. Unfortunately, while the drinks started off decent, the more we sipped, the worse they tasted. Something about the combination of spirits didn’t sit well with us, and we both ended up with slight headaches—mine faded after an hour, but my husband's lasted all night. Ursula Major ($17): Bearface whiskey, Ford’s gin, allspice dram, crème de violette, lemon, orgeat, honey, absinthe rinse. Less bold than a typical whiskey drink. My husband, who loves absinthe and usually orders whiskey-based cocktails, didn’t particularly enjoy this and thought it was okay. Nebula ($17): Ming River baijiu, Waterloo #9 gin, Chareau aloe liqueur, lemon, pineapple gum, hibiscus. It started off slightly sweet but had an unpleasant aftertaste that lingered. While the atmosphere and concept were intriguing, the cocktails didn’t hit the mark for us.

When we first arrived we were pretty excited, the atmosphere is dark, sexy and quite appealing. Spent a decent amount of time here and we were having a great time!! Service was okay nothing too exceptional, was a pretty busy night so understandable that it took awhile to order drinks. We were ordering the same drinks all night yet each time they were made completely different based on which bartender you ordered from which I guess is pretty normal as bartenders all over the world have their own perceptions on how a drink should taste so it didn't bother us at all. HOWEVER upon cashing out I felt extremely blind sided as the bar had added "auto grat" of 25%!!!!!! I did not catch this until after I signed and left the bar!! We were only a group of 4!!! I am still confused as to whether this is even legal!!!! This leaves a horrible taste in my mouth and makes me never want to return here!!! No where does it state they will do such a charge so I felt really scammed!!! I typically tip service quite generously in cash so after realising that I had already been charged 25% it just felt greedy and that the bartenders took advantage of the fact that we had been drinking for quite awhile.

Additionally as the night went on the bathrooms became horribly disgusting with poop explosion all over the toilets, toilet paper shrewn all about with a pungent smell and not one employee went to clean them up, which for the atmosphere and the prices they charge seems gross and rediculous!

Overall we wouldn't return because the experience isn't worth it and I would suggest that you pay real close attention to your tab when cashing out because apparently they...

Giving it 3 stars only because the gentleman that came in after 7pm was super pleasant. I had never been here before and it took over 40 min to get a drink after pointing out to one of the female bartenders that we had been waiting that long. We waited patiently for the first 30, and shortly after that a guy cut in line and ordered a long list of drinks after we had been in line waiting. I pointed out that we were in line first, mentioned how long we had waited and it was downhill after that. The bartender was extremely rude and told us that we were not waiting that long, rolled her eyes and then ignored us. Several groups who were in line behind us had left because it was taking too long to even get acknowledged. I understand that 2 bartenders during happy hour is probably hectic, but the way we were treated after being cut in front of was unlike any experience I've ever had at any establishment. The atmosphere is nice, but it's just not worth it. There are plenty of nice bars in the area. If I didn't already have friends there. I would have left after the first 20 min. Kudos for the gentleman that came in after 7. He actually treated us with respect and not like it was an inconvenience for us to be there in the...
