Considering this place is new, I thought I'd give it a way too in depth review. The short of it is, it's a good, if not stand out, fast food burger place with a couple notable things, and the staff when I went was excellent. If you want a far more in depth look, read on.
I went here with a group of friends late Monday night, around 9pm. The staff was exceptionally polite, willing to offer suggestions and explanations of multiple menu options. Once food was ordered we sat down and waited about five to ten minutes, and our food was brought out to us.
One of their big things was their condiment selection. On top of the normal ones, you had some more esoteric ones like vinegar for fries, and Tabasco for pretty much anything, and three specialty ones. "Happy Sauce", a special Mustard, and "Fry Sauce". I added the Happy Sauce to my burger, and although I'm normally a "use way too much ketchup" kinda guy I ended up eatting my fries with their fry sauce instead. Definitely recommend trying them out if you go here, they really help the place stand out as different than other burger choices.
My order was a 'Big Hat' (their name for a double hamburger), with added grilled onions, jalapeños, and cheddar cheese. I also got a side order of fries, along with a cherry limeaid.
The burger was good, definitely on the "fast food" side of burger restaurants. Overall though, the burger reminded me a lot of P. Terry's; a Fast food burger that is a clear step up from the National chains.
Fries were thin cut shoe strings, served in a paper bag stuffed full. The portion was pretty good, and the fries themselves were probably my favorite thing I got there. Pretty flavorful without any sauce on them. They were on the softer side, but not soggy; they had a slight crunch.
I was excited about the limeaid since I'm a big fan of them, but I ended up pretty disappointed. First, they don't make the cherry limeaid fresh there; they hand you a bottle from behind the counter when you order it. Second, the flavor was all off in my opinion. They use cherry syrup, and a whole lot of it. I couldnt really taste any of the "lime" in it. So, bottom line, if you really like cherry, you probably would enjoy it! If you are like me, and lean more on the "lime" side of things, best to stay away.
My group had some issues with our orders that are worth noting. My burger ended up coming without cheese and with bacon instead. Someone else had no bacon on their sandwich. They brought it up to the people at the counter, and they rushed out fresh bacon for him to add, so problem was solved pretty quickly.
Other things worth mentioning would be the fact they have some options beyond just beef. There's a chicken sandwich along with some chicken tenders. There was also a veggie burger. They serve beer inside, which two of my friends ordered and seemed happy with the results. Lastly, they serve a decent selection of milk shakes. Only one of us ordered one, but he raved about it to the point I almost ordered one myself.
Lastly, the place has a slight bent towards families. They have a pretty cute play area out front for kids, which considering most of Rock Rose is pretty kid unfriendly is a nice change. In addition, Tuesday is "family night"; half price burgers after 5pm.
In closing, I enjoyed myself quite a bit. But, I do wonder how often I might go back. P. Terry's is far more aggressively priced and the quality isn't that different to me. But, the special condiments, the cheaper burgers on Tuesdays, and the wider menu probably will get me back in there. If you are at Rock Rose, and are in the mood for something simple, this...
Read moreJust another over hyped, over priced burger joint.I had never been a customer prior to this visit to Austin but, thought that I would try this establisment out. Well, nothing quite started on the right foot from the get go. First, the young lady that took my order had a bit of difficulty getting it correct. Cheeseburger with only cheese and onion no "sauce", fries and a rootbeer. Pretty straight forward, no complications. Well, after a rocky start, hopefully I imagined it was going to be enjoyable. Not do fast. When I picked up my order, the first thing I noticed was, there was two(2) orders of fries on my tray. I said to the server, I don't think this is mine. I didn't order two serving of fries. He checked his copy of the receipt as I did mine and, said" you are correct". You have a "freebe". I didn't want additional fries but, what the hell. So I took my meal to my table took a sip of overpriced root beer and almost spit it over my table. Apparently my rootbeer had been sitting in the service area for or a period of time and the drink had gone flat and the ice had totally melted. Yuk!! The drink was replaced. Time for my highly rated burger. God, another failure.my almost plain cheeseburger was covered in some" secret" sauce". Another YUK!! At this point I nibbled on some fries and left. Needless to say I won't return. Pretty expensive trip for a cheeseburger, fries...
Read moreThis is a pretty nice place for burgers. Simple menu, yet you feel like you have many options. I like the Cowboy hat burger. My husband has tried the classic wrapped in lettuce and he likes it. I've also tried the tater tots and the chicken flashers and I honestly think the tater tots + chicken flashers are the stars of their menu. I've tried many tater tots in my days, but I have never tasted any that are as fresh, and just so mouth watering like Hat Creek's own. Super crispy and not soggy at all. They are a definite must try when dining here.
I gave four stars instead of five because I'm not really a fan of their buns. I truly believe that sesame seed buns are the way to go for burgers, but I know that HCBC is trying to be a little more unique in a wave of burger franchises opening up left and right. The spicy sauerkraut - I'd pass on it. It just really isn't appetizing to me. It tasted bland.
I have also tried their Birthday cake milkshake and it's delicious. There are sprinkles at the bottom of the shake and as a girl who loves her sprinkles, this is definitely the best part of the shake.
There isn't enough seats inside during summertime to accommodate families it seems, but I can see that they try to make the covered outside part cooler with fans and...
