"The Toxic Avenger is sold out" murmured my wife as we both turned to read the announcement board....Finally, I thought. I have something bad to say about Other Side Deli. If I had one piece of advise for anyone looking to indulge in this gem in the heart of Austin, its savor each bite. From the toasted bread kissed golden brown from the butter used when toasting it to the gracious helping of meat piled into every sandwich, these slices of sandwich art are an assult on all of your senses. Eating should engage you on multiple levels to be memorable and Other Side Deli has mastered the craft of combining flavor, feel, and presentation. We had the Ruben and the Othersider on our visit one with pastrami and the other with corned beef and we shared.....lunch shouldnt be this sinfully delicious. Heros exist as proven from the sanwhich masters at Other Side, and while they dont all wear capes, they all certainly appreciate and...
Read moreI heard about this deli from a friend and was excited to try it with a lunch friend date! We both live on opposite sides of town so we're always looking to try to find new places to visit that are central.
First of all, they have a great website so you can see the menu and get to know them before you visit. They also have ample parking in a parking lot, which is a plus for this part of town.
This place is small, but it's the perfect retro atmosphere, with old movie posters and a bit of a nostalgia vibe. It's clean, cool, and the staff is warm and friendly.
We easily ordered at the counter and food arrived very quickly. It was quiet enough that we could easily have conversation over lunch at the tables inside.
The food was really good! I got a grilled cheese and my friend got The Italian. Both were excellent. Food was very reasonably priced, as well. We will be adding this to the lunch date...
Read moreOtherside Deli is in an old, very small strip mall on the corner of 34th and Medical Parkway. The sign on the building does not stand out so keep your eyes open. We drive by it twice before we found it.
We arrived about 11:30 before the rush. I ordered The Otherside which is a choice of Pastrami, Corned Beef or Turkey with Russian Dressing and Coleslaw on Rye. It was delicious. The bread was fresh and is sourced daily from Sour Duck Market in East Austin. Next time I will ask it to be toasted. My companion had the Rueben which is choice of Pastrami, Corned Beef or Turkey with Russian Dressing, Swiss Cheese and Sauerkraut on Grilled Rye. I think it was toasted not grilled. The homemade pickles were a bit weird and definitely a work in progress. Caution: the tile floor was clean but very slippery so be careful.
Hope...
