PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE, IF YOU CARE FOR SELF RESPECT AND CLEAN GOOD QUALITY FOOD; THERE IS NO SCARCITY OF GOOD INDIAN PLACES IN AUSTIN.
I work as a mental health counselor who stopped by to grab a something to go from Taj Palace. I am writing this review to report how terrible their food was in the buffet today. In addition, its apparent that these kind of Indian owners are what gives us Indians a bad name through not only bad customer service but also disrespectful, lacking any social intelligence.
I have been to places with poor customer service but their work was good, food was good, and once you are nice to them and give them a break, they are doing the best they can working around the clock shift. So I am not a frequent complainer or regularly write reviews. However today, the experience was negatively mind blowing; how the owner literally treated me like a child and disgraced/disrespected me.
She suggested I buy the buffet to go since everything else would take more than 15 minutes to prepare. After I payed, she handed me a tiny tiny little box with very small compartments; which apparently cant hold much food at all. I am not a big eater and this was very small. I did not want to be rude so I asked if I could get a container without compartments so I can at least put everything separately on top of my rice. She stated "sorry that's all we have because people like to keep things separate".
So I continued to go take my food. I could barely put anything in there besides 2-3 things, and that too just a few tablespoons of each. I requested the lady to help me resolve this situation so I don't have to put all different curries in one small compartment. She stated in front of all the other people, "you're not suppose to get all the dishes here in the buffet". She smiled and walked away. I humbly thanked her, took the little I could and left.
Respect for others is something you have, it can not be learnt. I will never return to this place and will be sending out a mass email to everyone I know in Austin to never go there. And believe me, I have been in Austin since 1995; I know 100's of people. And there is no lack of good Indian...
Read moreTaj Palace in my opinion has the best curries in Austin. You choose your meat (or veg) your type of curry and a huge dinner plate will come out to about $10-12 arriving with hot, handmade naan. Personally I have a weakness for lamb, but you can get 'em with beef, chicken and shrimp as well. They also have delicious samosa, various lassi, desserts and an expansive buffet (which is a good deal but do it early as it sits out during the day). The inside is utterly charming with it's funky Indian hole-in-the-wall-ish flair and the TVs always tuned to Bollywood glory or some random guy playing a sitar. And they are open until 11PM (actually they will gladly stay open later if you make it in the door before then) and are right around the corner from the ever-ghetto-fabulous Highland 10 movie theatre. For those who may be skeptical upon arriving that they may get knifed in the parking lot, take heart - it may feel like you are going to be brutally murdered but I have had so many delicious meals here that it is completely worth the risk (also; you won't). The owners and servers are friendly and in my experience, truly...
Read moreBy far the worst Indian buffet I've been to. Options are very limited. Food was almost over when we went at 1:40 pm. Asked for more chicken tandoori and the batch they made was raw. When we told the lady (I think she's the manager), she gave us excuses saying "they must have just made this one piece," "probably there was another piece on top." She did ask whether we needed another piece-- however a simple apology would have sufficed. The desert section is pathetic as well. Just cantaloupe and no Indian sweets. The desert section was in front of the restrooms and there was a small fly on the fruit! Plus they charge gratuity for a buffet and there's even a tip section thereafter. The only thing I enjoyed is the water (haha) asked for warm water and it was the perfect warm. Save yourselves a trip and look for...
