Saffron Restaurant — Restaurant in Bloomingdale

We visited Saffron the other day. It was a Sunday night and the building was empty but the staff was busy with take out orders. We chose to visit Saffron because of the way that other customers said that the manager handled himself. After reading several other local Indian restaurant reviews, we felt we would have the most pleasant and positive experience at Saffron.

First, I have eaten Indian food plenty of times but very rarely in a formal dining setting like this. So the experience was unique to the other times. I understood quickly what was discussed in several complaints the food is sold à la carte. It doesn't necessarily mean you are having an expensive meal but rice doesn't come with anything. If you are looking for a buffet experience than sitting down to a formal dinning setting is not the right situation. Our food did take a little while to get to us but the were busy and we were understanding. It was no problem for us, the waiter was attentive so that really helped. We were in and out within an hour, so it wasn't too long it, just felt long due to the quietness of the restaurant.

The restaurant was very clean and the owner came over to check on us mid-meal; everything couldn't have gone any better.

We ordered the following dishes:

Appetizer of Vegetable and Lamb Samosas. Entrees of Butter Chicken, Shrimp Laziz, and Tandoori Chicken. Sides of Vegetable Naan and Garlic Naan.

The food was hot, well prepared and served on clean dishes. We felt the food portions were just right. I had only wished I ordered rice but it didn't change how good the meal was. I would recommend stopping in and ordering, or calling for take out this restaurant is...

Quite disappointed. I went to this restaurant yesterday “alone” to have dinner, the moment I entered the restaurant manager asked me “how can I help you”? I said that I would like to dine in, he asked if I had a reservation and I said no. I asked if the restaurant allows people to dine in only through reservations? The person said no, we do this as a process which made no sense to me as the restaurant has only a few members dining in. **Even there is no mention of such thing on Google.

Then he asked me what do I like to have? I said Chicken biriyani and then the staff just took the menu away from me without even asking me.

After the biriyani was delivered I asked for a masala tea which was on the menu, the person went and informed the manager about this. The manager came again to me saying we don’t serve masala tea anymore (I told it was on the menu), then he said this place gets visited mostly by “white” customers and they don’t like it and hence they stopped making it. This was quite absurd, then I asked the staff what Indian style is this restaurant and he said they are Delhi style!

The menu said the biriyani was chicken “dum” biriyani but I was served an instant made chicken biriyani with big chicken pieces which were quite hard to chew! This past Saturday we decided to get some curry for dinner, but the place that we wanted to go to was closed that evening for some reason. Not to deterred on our quest for curry we decided to go here. This was probably some of the best curry that I've had in a very long time.

Dinner started with some veggie samosas, they came out hot and fresh with a nice flaky shell. One bite in and we were fans. Added some chutney and it was great. wonderful flavor, a hint of spice, great aroma.

Dinner was malai kofta and dum aloo, with rice and naan. Everything was exceptional. In between bites we were telling each other how good everything was, how happy we were that we ended up coming here, and how we were going to make this place a regular destination.

Now good food is one thing but with the variety of food options in the area the deciding factor is always service. Every single employee that we encountered there was super friendly. We didn't have to wait overly long for our food, the checks, or anything else. the restaurant was clean. great experience all around.

If I had to give one bit of criticism, we would have preferred our food to be a bit spicier but we didn't order it as spicy. the default spice level was plenty flavorful with a hint of spice. So next trip we will ask them to kick it up a...
