I can't say enough great things about my experience 2 weeks ago. The first thing I ordered was the crudo, I love sashimi and I love citrus so I figured I would love this. I did. Fresh fish, bright and flavorful 10/10! I was feeling fancy so for my second course I ordered the grilled peach salad... now listen, I'm not a cooked fruit person but this was the juiciest most flavorful peach I've ever had and every component of the salad complimented each other. Last I ordered the steak, the grilled corn had a good crunch but didn't lose the fresh of the cob texture. I don't know what's in that house made steak sauce but holy moly that stuff should be bottled. I just loved that everything felt really thought out, but not overcomplicated. As I was raving to the bartender about my meal the chef came out and I was able to chat with Chef Kelly. Such a nice guy!

Also, Halle was bartending and made me one of her creations off of the drink menu. The service was great, drinks were great, food was great, and you can tell these people care about what they're doing. I will be back!

  • I was only going to leave the above review on a different site but then noticed that recently these guys got some complaints here that portions sizes and food weren't worth the price. One conversation with the chef told me that literally everything is made from scratch, local/regional. I'm not even kidding one of the farmer's they use was literally sitting at the bar when I was there. (Waterwheel I think? I can't remember the name of the farm) Local, from scratch, thoughtful, balanced, food is expensive. Do you know what the cost of labor is right now? Do you know what the cost of food that is NOT local, or fresh is right now? Fast food places are paying nearly $20/hr and you're going to be mad at a place that probably has to pay their staff more than that because it's skilled labor for charging appropriately for their food. If you want a cheap meal in 2024 good luck finding anything locally or sustainably sourced. I hear Applebees has a 2 for $20 deal. You should be ashamed of yourself for wanting to knock down a small businesses ratings when everyone is struggling to stay...

This used to be one of my favorite places in Boise, unfortunately the food and small portions do not justify the price anymore. After the most recent dinner visit here I had an entree and split a starter but left starving and had to eat again somewhere else. It has gotten noticeably more expensive and there are so many options downtown that offer better food in better portions for a better price. Drinks and a starter only or happy hour might be an option still, but I will no longer recommend dinner.

Edit: I am appalled by the moderns reaction and must now change my review to 1 star purely based on the marketing manager. After our group expressed disappointment with the portion sizes ($35 for a main that filled a quarter of a plate might I add), the marketing manager for The Modern literally tracked down where members of our party worked and sent a retaliatory email to their company complaining about our review. I have NEVER heard of a business operating like this and I can’t believe the number of assumptions this person made in order to reach out to someone’s place of work and accuse them of libel. They chose to ignore the fact that we had left 5 star reviews years back, rated atmosphere 5 stars, and have been coming to the modern for years. I can no longer recommend the modern for anything after they retaliated against an honest review. Extremely...

Absolutely outstanding experience at The Modern Bar! Our server (Ngen) was so attentive and her timing was immaculate. She started by telling us their drink special for the evening, as well as the soup of the day, while answering all of our questions and adding recommendations. Extremely knowledgeable and kind! Starting with our cocktails, we were blown away. Very refreshing and delicious. The charred asparagus salad was unique and tasty in every way. Our second round of drinks were different than what my partner or I might usually order and were both, again, thoroughly pleased. For entrees we shared the HALIBUT and oh my goodness!!! So eloquently prepared and displayed- wrapped in a perfectly cooked leafy green, every so tightly that it held its shape and maintained its moisture content. Could not have been more perfectly cooked. The GNOCCHI was also some of the most perfectly cooked that I have ever experienced. Chef Jade came out, upon our request, to explain to us how the halibut is prepared and was very informative and nice!

I don't want to be the longest review ever written, but I have nothing but good things to say about this place, their food, and their staff! 10/10...

Wow, how have I lived in Boise for 3 years & not experienced the Modern until just this week? I have been missing out!!! We stopped in for the last round of Campfire Stories that was being held in the Modern Courtyard. Sweet Zoey was super helpful in getting us a little corner table even tho we didn't have reservations. She was attentive all night; and just the right amount! Not overbearing at all. The food. Oh my Goodness! We started with the Bread & Butter. (see photo) This is no ordinary butter. Something about this salted butter sent my tastebuds into high gear! Def. give it a shot. I ordered the Beet Salad as my main. The presentation was stunning. I enjoyed every single bite that I swirled around the sauces & purees. I SUPER enjoyed my cocktail as well! So fun to see something that included Pisco on a menu! I feel like I never see that in Boise. It was super delish! Honestly, we can't wait to come back! Thank you for such a lovely experience!!!!!!

The one and only Treefort venue I made it to and glad I did! It's not just the hotel's retro design but the pseudo low-key vibe, comfortably on the fringes of the madding crowd, with an subtle, unassuming ambiance that attracts but doesn't overwhelm ... compatible with music from the Bellingham, Washington girls band, Valley Cats featuring a genre so confounding that it was undefinable yet captivatingly energetic , almost 70s-era groovy. I'm about as far away from a music critic that one could be so trust me when I say they were good, my entirely arbitrary and uninformed assessment. But try and argue with me, given that we were all standing there braving the elements in 15-20 degree Temps where I could feel goosebumps forming on my earlobes, a condition Hungarians call ill babure (phonetic spelling). And, informal E-scooter parking!
