Creative breakfast sandwich option in North End.
With most of the breakfast options in North End being the usual American diner fare, Sunny Girl brings a breadth of fresh air to the neighborhood’s breakfast offerings. I recently took a visit to try a couple of their sandwiches and had a satisfying experience.
Although the cafe was a bit small, it exuded a casual yet chic vibe that matched the quality of their sandwiches. They also shined with their house-made English muffins, which laid a moist and fluffy foundation for most of their creative sandwich lineup.
One of chef’s favorite, the Lox was an ensemble of smoked salmon, creamy mascarpone, and confit fennel, topped with a refreshing citrus salad. The grapefruit's citrusy notes beautifully complemented the fennel's aroma, and modest portions of salmon allowed these toppings to shine through.
A tribute to North End's Italian roots, Truffle Shuffle featured Tomato Conserva spread on one side of the focaccia and Basil Gremolata on the other. Its rich Italian flavors were further enhanced with black truffle pecorino, burrata, and pancetta.
The East Coast Tuna was also an elevated take on the classic tuna salad sandwich. The crunchy iceberg lettuce and sweet onion added texture, while the Wild Sicilian Oregano provided a subtle yet distinct flavor twist.
An interesting note was the unconventional wrapping of the sandwiches, with the aluminum side inside and the paper outside. I’m not sure if this was intentional, but the paper side is usually on the inside to absorb excess moisture. Thankfully, it didn’t affect the sandwiches that much as we had them within 15 minutes.
Overall, Sunny Girl does a great job of packing refined flavors into sandwiches. While these might not constitute a hefty meal, they offer a delightful start to the day. Highly recommend...
Read moreI wish our experience was more aligned to the fantastic reviews other people have written, but we left feeling extremely dissatisfied with our experience. When we arrived, we were able to place our order rather easily. However, as we waited for our food, I started noticing several groups who ordered after us get their food. After we had been waiting for 30 minutes, one group ordered and received their food within 5 minutes - we were still waiting. When we asked to check in on our order, the person at the register took another 10-15 minutes to check on our order (I understand that he was busy, but the customer who has already paid and has been waiting for 30 minutes should take some level of priority). After finally checking on our order, he says that "they are working on it" - note we had a very simple order of some of their most common breakfast sandwiches. We asked if they forgot the order and the only response we got was a shrug and a repeat of the statement of "they are working on it". After the order came to us after 45 minutes, our order was also wrong. I understand that this happens, however what made this so discouraging was there was no real apology and no intention to make it right by offering some sort of compensation (the right move in this situation would have been to offer a refund, or at the very least offer us a free coffee or something - some small gesture that showed empathy would have been greatly appreciated). Considering nothing was done to make this situation right, we do not feel comfortable giving our money back to a restaurant who did so little to right a wrong situation. Hopefully nobody else experiences this, but unless the situation is corrected - it is unlikely we return to this...
Read moreVisiting Boston for the first time, I wanted breakfast. Staying in a hotel about a 15 min walk, my mom and I wanted to try it. Homemade English muffins?! What!!! I somehow changed my breakfast idea and wanted to try the Italian sandwich and it was probably the best decision I’ve ever made. I am a huge fan of Italian sandwiches and when they are good they’re good. This Italian sandwich was top tier. Everything was perfect. The slicing of the lettuce, the meat, the burrata cheese and the hoagie roll was amazing. I had to purchase a fresh English muffin and having the other half of the Italian sandwich on the English muffin was absolute perfection. Wow!
My mom ordered the breakfast torta with chorizo and avocado. Born and raised in California, she was iffy about getting chorizo because it can be quite greasy sometimes, but she couldn’t stop talking about it on the way back to the hotel lol. This was the definition of a great experience for a local restaurant. If you ever want to open a franchise in Louisville, KY, please...
