2 star experience here at best most recently. Oh well. I remember getting a delicious Italian sub here years ago before they closed for renovations. Now? The staff didn't know what that was...so when I named some of the meats, I learn they don't carry them. What? Bummer...weird.. a little thrown off. A sub place marketed as a Deli online... that doesn't carry ingredients for an Italian sub, which are not unusual ingredients. As far as subs and sandwiches go, Spanky's has the absolute basics. Nothing more. It's just ok now. If you want variety and quality ingredients including the breads down to the meats down to the toppings and a much more competitive price, Smith's is honestly where it's at now. They have it all. Lastly, why are the staff not trained more to encourage tips for themselves? I paid for my order with a debit card and they said I don't have to sign unless it's $25. I asked about leaving the tip on the card because I don't have small cash and it's still the right thing to do, leave a tip. It's like pulling teeth to leave a tip and the girl was borderline confused. Oh well, weird experience. I left the tip. There wasn't much hustle here. The staff could do a lot better for themselves and their pay if they encouraged tips more. Make every single person sign, no matter what...because it is likely they will tip. Who cares if it's not required unless the order is a certain amount. Go to a sandwich place back east and those students are thirsty for those tips. Management should want that for their staff... encourage their staff to...
Read moreThis place had closed a few years back for what I had thought was permanently, but it is apparently back open again in the same location after some renovation. Unfortunately it seems like they laid off their entire staff in the process. When I came in I saw only two people working behind the counter. There was no triage of any kind and one worker was busy giving out free samples of ice cream to two people who had come in much later before taking our orders. The menu has a problem in that it doesn't clarify in any of the "soup" sections, where it lists the quantity of what you're paying for in ounces, whether that quantity is attributed to the amount of soup you get or the size of your beverage. This needs to be clarified as even the people behind the counter weren't even sure of what the menu meant by this. I must say the food was very good, but the atmosphere has somewhat lost its charm from what it used to be before it closed. Everything has been given a garish coat of paint and high amounts of lighting that takes away from its old "diner" feel and feels more like a warehouse. But the food honestly made up for everything. They have high quality ingredients and give out more than what you pay for. They even have dollar bags of...
Read moreWhile on a visit to Utah, I went to Spanky's for a bite and chance to meet up with an old high school friend. Spanky's was my suggestion based on a recommendation. We walked in at 6:30. There were 7 in our group. It took 50 minutes to make our sandwiches. My son, who does not like sandwiches, ordered another menu item. The girl just look at him and said, "I don't know how to make that." We then proceeded to walk her through how to make their own menu item. After getting our food, we finally sat down to eat. Almost immediately afterwards, another girl came out from the back and said, "Just so you know, we closed 10 minutes ago, so could you hurry?" Had they mentioned the 7:00 close earlier, we just would have gone somewhere else. My bad for not noticing, but it never occurred to me that walking into a restaurant at 6:30 pm would push up against closing time. Still it was never mentioned until after our 50 minute wait. Instead of a nice visit with friends, we waited nearly an hour for our food, spent nearly $100, and then were promptly told to get out. Not the experience I envisioned catching up with my friend over a meal. Like milk on a hot day, Spanky's was a bad choice. Food was just okay. Service...
