Excellent selection of house-made, craft beer. The Hayburner is a personal favourite and even If you aren't a big craft beer drinker, or prefer something less hoppy, they have a few lighter beers on the menu that are excellent, as well, which were enjoyed by the non-beer drinkers in the group. No complaints about the food, served hot and fresh. The appetizers were nice, the dip flight was tasty, the chips were really fresh, tasted house-made, not sure if they were, but good non the less. The wings were 4 of out of five. Good, classic Buffalo style wings, good size and the hot had a nice kick to it, but they didn't blow me away. We also had the Ruben which was nice. Good, fresh bread and nice meat and cheese, included a choice of 3 mayo-style dips, the VERY NICE server gave us two, i don't remember which ones but they were both tasty! The Atmosphere was great, really open with lots of seating, industrial style space, with cool Western NY specific wall murals.
Service: The hostess' seemed a little scattered at first, but to be fair it was quite busy and a Friday Night, but made us feel like she was a bit put out by us coming in. They had us sit in the bar area to wait for a table, but didn't let us know that we could order food there instead of waiting for a table, or tell us about the beer, or the brewery, or really anything. It was somewhat confusing and underwhelming. And once the hostess came back and let us know that there was a table ready, i guess she hadn't let any of the servers know, so we had to wave someone down to get service. But our Server was amazing! So quick (once he was aware of us) and friendly. Was very knowledgeable about everything on the menu, and the beer. He was extremely enthusiastic about Big Ditch, and gave us the background story, and chatted with us for quite a bit. He completely made us forget about the whole hostess experience.
Location was great, perfectly situated in downtown buffalo, lots of on-street parking and its near the area, so i am sure there are parking lots near-by. We got lucky with the on-street parking right out front.
Over-all excellent experience, would recommend to craft beer drinkers visiting the...
Read moreAptly referred to as "The Hope Dismond of Buffalo Breweries", Big Ditch lives up to its name in each and every way.
The building design and layout, their ability to provide a comfortable dining experience in any and all seasons, their robust seasonal rotations of both craft beer selections and food specials are just a few of the many ways this establishment sets itself apart from the rest.
Big Ditch is a trailblazer in the Buffalo Brewery Space, and are masters of the craft. In addition to seven or eight true staples on their craft beer menu, they somehow manage to rotate 3-4 limited edition craft beers monthly. In ADDITION TO THAT, they manage to rotate specialized beer cocktails that often incorporate the limited edition beers.
Because of this, it's accurate to say that not only do they provide a spectacular beer experience, but it often is a UNIQUE and INDUPLICABLE beer experience.
Unfortunately for my wallet, the excellence doesn't stop there: the food is Chef Quality. Octoberfest, St. Patrick's Day, Thanksgiving... there are chef specials tailor made for every holiday. When there isn't a holiday, rotating specials can be found that often match seasonal preferences. I have not had one dish yet that wasn't 10/10.
And finally, there's brunch. I provided photos of the bruch items, which include one of the Top 3 bloody Mary's I've had in the city, an awesome mimosa/beermosa spread, and interesting (while satifying) brunch food selections. Brunch truly makes Big Ditch a no-brainer as an 'anytime' option. Brunch, lunch, dinner, professional meetings, Saturday drinking, a quick stop... This place is a...
Read moreAs someone who has been in the industry for years, I hate to write poor reviews. I’ve spoken to a manager, left comment cards, and if they didn’t seem to care … just never went back. I’m hoping that Matt reads this one, your place can be great.
Travelled to Buffalo for a wedding and Big Ditch looked perfect. Place has a great vibe, was busy but not too packed that it was uncomfortable and the menu fit the bill when with teens.
Melissa the server was the bright spot, the food was less enjoyable than I expected.
Two out of two burgers way over cooked. Rare was well done and medium rare was so well done it was dry and tasteless. The fries were so salty they were inedible, the poutine even more so. Our mock tails were not very good either. Perhaps we hit it on a bad night. If I lived closer I’d come back for a beer, but…. We leave Monday and the food wasn’t good enough for a second visit, even for a beer.
The neighborhood looks like it’s growing and there are many choices. That should bring more people inside but without keeping a better eye on the cooks you’re losing business. Restaurant business has been hard enough since Covid and I don’t want to pile on, but we weren’t the first table tonight to complain, the table next to us too had issues. We heard there were more before us.
I hope you can figure it out Matt, your place has the potential of being great. Truly wishing you Good luck! And for those in the Buffalo community, please don’t let my review inhibit your visit to this establishment. Not my intention here, I just hoped the owner will put his attention to make this...
