A trip to The Flaming Fish in Buffalo, NY, is a must for any seafood lover, especially for those who enjoy a Southern-inspired twist on classic dishes. My recent meal there was a delightful experience, with a couple of standout items that deserve a special mention. To start, we ordered The Bombay appetizer. The menu describes it as 12 golden fried shrimp tossed in a signature blend of spices and a light, spicy sauce, served over a bed of lettuce with shredded carrots, cabbage, and green onions. This appetizer lives up to its name and then some. The shrimp were perfectly friedācrispy on the outside without being greasy, and juicy and tender on the inside. The light spicy sauce was the real star, offering a fantastic kick of flavor without overwhelming the delicate taste of the shrimp. The bed of fresh veggies beneath it provided a cool, crisp counterpoint to the warm, fried seafood, creating a well-balanced and satisfying first course. It's a great choice for sharing or as a lighter entree. For the main course, I opted for The Remington. This dish is a beautiful plate of food, featuring a 7-ounce herb-crusted salmon fillet and grilled shrimp, served over creamy garlic mashed potatoes and collard greens, all finished with their signature "Sauce Remington." The salmon was cooked to perfectionāmoist and flaky with a flavorful, well-seasoned crust. The grilled shrimp were plump and succulent, a nice contrast to the salmon. The creamy garlic mashed potatoes were rich and comforting, a perfect base for the protein. And while collard greens can sometimes be hit-or-miss, these were tender and savory, adding a hearty, Southern touch to the meal. The signature sauce was a delicious final flourish, tying all the elements together with a creamy, herby flavor. The portion size was generous, leaving me feeling fully satisfied. Overall, The Flaming Fish delivers on its promise of delicious, flavorful seafood. The atmosphere is vibrant and inviting, and the service is known to be friendly and efficient. While some reviews have mentioned inconsistencies with side dishes, my experience with The Remington's sides was excellent. From The Bombay's perfectly spiced shrimp to the expertly prepared Remington, this restaurant is a top contender for a fantastic seafood...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreAfter seeing a few of their Instagram videos, I was eager to finally try the Flaming Fish. We were seated immediately by a very kind, very unique server with a one-of-a-kind personality and decided on a fried catfish and shrimp combo and a battered haddock and shrimp combo. Pro tip: If you dine in on Fridays you're offered the choice of three sides instead of the regular two, so we ended up with mac n' cheese, collard greens, hush puppies, yams, fries, and rice and beans.
It took a while for our dinners to come out due to what seemed like an abundance of take-out orders, but it was definitely worth the wait. I wish we had taken pictures because the portions were gigantic; and of course, everything looked delicious too. Thankfully, the taste lived up to our expectations. The mac n' cheese was creamy and sharp, the greens nice and smoky, the hush puppies tender and perfectly seasoned, and the rice and beans was almost a dinner in itself. The yams were perhaps a touch too sweet, but still satisfying. Now for the fish and shrimp: My catfish was crisp and piping hot and while the first piece was very tasty, the second piece was overly fishy. Unfortunately, that was the only downside to the meal. My partner enjoyed his haddock (I didn't try it) and both of our shrimp was up to par. Although we rarely order dessert, our server did a fine job "selling" the bread pudding/peach cobbler concoction, so we took it to-go. If you have room for it, or even if you don't, order yourself a piece!
On a different note, the ambiance in the restaurant could use a slight adjustment, particularly the lighting which was way too bright. The tables also have an odd epoxy finish that gave off a wet look (assuming it goes with the theme), which created an uneven surface for our beverages. Overall, it looks like a cross between a fast food and dine-in restaurant with a side of Wayfair decor. Softer lighting, a few edits here and there, and maybe a bar in the future could really put this place...
