Say "cheese!" đ§ No one would assert this is authentic Mexican food, but it sure is satisfying if you're drungry or have the munchies. Simple American "Mexican" staples like tacos, burritos, and nachos, just much fresher than somewhere like Taco Bell. Hot, fresh, homemade refried beans and freshly grated cheese are churned out in enormous portions. They really pack on the cheese generously, which is one of the things I love about this place. And I'm not talking about that crappy pre-shredded cheese that comes out of a plastic package and is covered in that weird powder that keeps it from sticking together. This is real cheese shredded fresh daily and doled out liberally.
Bean & cheese burritos come with either mild (red) or spicy (green) sauce -- or none, if you prefer, but I recommend some sauce, as the beans can, occasionally, be a bit dry and benefit from some moisture. Personally, I love the green sauce, which is slightly sweet. Of course, they're also famous for their hot sauce. It's peppery and slightly vinegary for those who have never tried it. Pepper like black pepper, not like jalpeĂąo pepper. Not too spicy but adds just the right amount of kick. They make fresh batches every day so the consistency can vary from day to day. I like it when it's thicker but occasionally it'll be a bit watery or too vinegary.
You used to be able to get a good-sized burrito for like a buck and 26 cents, but they've had to increase their prices over the years. It was either that or the portions had to get smaller.
This place is virtually a landmark in Campbell. Long-standing and beloved by its cult following. Drunks, in particular, love this late-night place after last call, so be warned if you go after midnight you might witness anything from mildly annoying to mildly entertaining antics. I at least take some comfort in the idea that Campbell bar-hoppers are sobering up a bit before going home. They can get really busy at night, especially on Taco Thursday and Tostada Tuesday.
If you've never been here before, the staff might come across as a bit curt, but when you become a regular, you realize that they really are nice people (and will even give you free food). They just don't seem interested in over-indulging in sycophantic niceties. Any staff regularly subjected to crazies, somnambulant stoners, and routy drunk people too frequently will surely grow a bit jaded. Come for the food; not for first-class table service. This is the kind of place you expect cheesy nachos and bubbly fountain drinks; not cheesy phonies with bubbly...
Read moreIf youâre old enough to remember what Taco Bell USED to taste like, back in the 70âs & 80âs, when they were still using ârealâ meat & beans & cheese , then Taco Bravo will take you back to those âgood olâ daysâ. Even their homemade sauces (both the red taco sauce, & their delicious green sauce) taste like the OG Taco Bell sauces. & If you love cheese the way I do, youâll be in 7th heaven, as they put about a half pound of fresh, shredded, mild cheddar on every item. Come on Tuesdays for $1.29 Tostadas, & Thursdays for $1.29 Tacos to REALLY get the most bang for your buck, but even on âregularâ days, the prices are more than fair for the quality & quantity of food you get (their bean & cheese burritos for 3 bucks & change are HEAVYâŚ). Everything is good here, from the nachos to the tacos to the burritos to the enchiladas & Chile verde. You literally cannot make a bad choice. My âgo toâ order is a Taco Delite (basically a âdouble deckerâ taco, with a crispy taco supreme- w/ sour cream & tomato- wrapped in a soft, refried bean covered flour tortilla) & a bean burrito w/ green sauce. True comfort food from a Bay Area original, always fresh & made...
