Listen. If you ever find yourself wandering through the salt-kissed mist of Cannon Beach with sand in your shoes and an ache for something sweet in your soul, go ahead and duck into Schwietert's Cones & Candy. It's a sugar-slinging time machine. Shelves groan under the weight of taffy in colors that don't occur in nature and fudge dense enough to warp gravity.
I had the ice cream. Two scoops. Marionberry Pie and Mountain Huckleberry. Both from Tillamook, which around here is less a brand and more a benevolent dairy cult. These berries are like edible postcards from the Pacific Northwest. One bite and you're knee-deep in a foggy forest thinking you hear Bigfoot weeping quietly from joy.
Of course the prices are high. You're in a town where the beach views are free and everything else makes up for it. The real gamble is who hands you your scoop. Some of us got generous lumps the size of a toddler's fist while others looked like they'd been served a sample. Such is life in a democracy.
The lines wound throughout the store, but it moved along at a respectable clip. People were smiling. Sugar does that. All in all, this is the kind of place that doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is. A temple to nostalgia. A sanctuary for the sweet-toothed and sunburnt.
Four stars. One star held in reserve for the day someone figures out how to standardize...
Read moreWent into this place for the first time, it was my first time visiting cannon beach. I was walking around with my two year old looking at candy and then we came across some rotating shelves of souvenirs. There were glass mugs on the very bottom (closest to the floor) on one of the spinning shelves. Before I realized my daughter had picked one up and dropped it. The first guy that came over to clean it up told my family and I not to worry and that it happens all the time. Then the store manager came over and said one of us had to pay for it. I was pretty upset that the guy charged me not retail but FULL price for a crappy mug that he had on a SPINNING shelf, on the bottom in a candy shop. So I was pretty upset and he wasn't understanding the least bit, just kept saying "I'll take it into consideration, I don't know what you want me to say". Well I want you to be smart about where you have your $16 mugs in a candy store where there are kids looking around, and if it happens all the time why are the mugs still there? Left a bad experience in my eyes and I'll never go back or recommend this place. Luckily I have a good heart and payed because it was my child that broke it, but I was...
Read moreI want to say that the staff at Scweiters is very above and beyond . . I accidentally left my debit card in the machine at Cannon Beach shop and got all the way home to where we lived and found out that it was missing. I called the shop and asked if they had it and sure enough they did thank heavens! The gentleman that answered was patient . Reluctantly I asked if he could mail it if I sent the info and postage , not necessary was said . I cannot say enough or thank him for the customer service, it would have put me through through loops with bank and waiting for a new one . Thank you so much Josh, for going out of your way , for your customer service and the way you sent it with so much detail. Including the fact that the card have been Accidentally charged and a credit had been issued to my account. This meant a whole lot to me! I certainly will come back and buy and recommend the shops to all who go to the coast...
