I can confidently say this is one of the most refreshing, vibrant, and thoughtfully designed dining experiences in downtown Chicago. Just steps from Millennium Park, The Bean, and the Magnificent Mile, this new Mexican restaurant is more than just a place to eat — it’s a moment, a vibe, and a cultural crossroads all wrapped into one.

From the second you walk through the door, you’re immersed in something special. The hand-woven archways immediately catch your eye — stunning and symbolic, they set the tone for a space that feels handcrafted, soulful, and full of story. The design is a perfect blend of authentic Mexico with subtle, stylish nods to Chicago’s own rich identity.

The atmosphere is electric — part taqueria, part cantina, and 100% unforgettable. Like the menu says:

In Mexico, a taqueria isn’t just a place to eat — it’s where all Mexicans intersect. Here, workers, students, executives, artists, abuelitas, and tourists all stand shoulder to shoulder for the same thing: un buen taco. And let me tell you — these tacos? Absolute fire. Bold flavors, fresh ingredients, traditional techniques with just the right twist. The chaos is fast, the warmth is real, and everyone is equal in front of the taquero.

But then there’s the cantina side — where time slows down, stories are shared, and every sip of your handcrafted cocktail becomes part of a bigger memory. And yes, there’s a tequila tap — a dangerously welcome addition for serious tequila lovers. It’s playful, indulgent, and totally on-brand for a place that’s all about turning a meal into a celebration.

The staff was phenomenal — friendly, genuine, and clearly proud of the experience they’re helping to create. Every detail was considered, and the energy is contagious.

And let’s not forget the genius move: a dedicated quick-serve lunch entrance. Whether you’re racing between meetings or squeezing in a bite between sightseeing stops, you can get the same quality, flavor, and hospitality in a faster, grab-and-go format. It’s ideal for busy downtown life without compromising the magic.

This isn’t just a restaurant — it’s a cathedral to Mexico’s past, present, and future. Fueled by top-quality ingredients and bold vision, this place isn’t following trends — it’s creating them.

This is our Momento — and I’m already counting down to...

This place is an absolute disappointment.

We decided to try it because of the high ratings, but nothing about our dining experience was satisfactory.

First: the unnecessary dining card system. The first thing we were asked to do upon arrival was link our credit card to a restaurant card to use for ordering on a touchscreen. Ok you want to cut the cost of waitstaff. I get it. But why not let me order scanning some QR code using my phone or just using the machine—which is already common in many restaurants—so that I could have saved 2 extra trips back to the receptionist to tell him that the card doesn’t work.

Second, the service. Our tacos arrived with no sauces, even though every other table had theirs. When I tried to flag someone down, the staff either avoided me or smiled while walking away. Nobody cared to ask a single word. At one point, I thought we were finally getting attention when a manager-like person pointed us out to a waitress. The waitress was happily chatting with her coworker. she nodded to the manager, and then once he left she went straight back to chatting and never came.

We waited about 7 minutes before finally getting a nice bartender to help us.

Third, for an overpriced Mexican place, they didn’t even give us complimentary tortilla chips. I just saw some reviews mentioned chips, so now looking back, on top of the wait for sauce, it started to feel personal.

And the food? Mediocre at best. Doesn’t justify the ratings. At least not good enough to let me ignore the service. The portions...

I recently visited the restaurant for the first time, and while my experience started off a little challenging, it ended on a very positive note.

Entering with a stroller was difficult, as it took quite a while to get the staff’s attention. I even tried the side door, which was locked, and had to circle back before a kind customer finally helped me get assistance. Once the staff explained why the side door was locked, it made sense.

Before placing my order, I used the restroom, which unfortunately was not in the best condition, with visible dirt on the sink, sticky floors, and an unpleasant odor. Despite that, the attendant who helped me with my to-go order was very kind. However, when I arrived home, I discovered that my fish taco and beef order were incorrect.

The following day, I called the restaurant, and Paulina, the manager, handled the situation with great professionalism. She invited me back for a complimentary meal. When I returned, she greeted me warmly and was very attentive. Another staff member also kindly assisted with remaking my order, explaining that the previous day had been especially busy and short-staffed, which caused the mix-up.

I truly appreciated the thoughtful way the situation was resolved. The food was delicious, and I left with a much better impression. Thank you again—I look forward to returning...

Five stars isn’t enough! The vibe at Momento Cantina is incredible—the playlist was on point not too loud as I’m hard of hearing, and the energy in the space made the whole experience feel special. The service from the servers Stef and Hugo was super quick, and we were even treated to complimentary chips and beans from Chef Saúl (such a thoughtful surprise!). What really made this visit memorable was how personal everything felt. Chef Saúl came out to our table to offer us a taste of his new horchata recipe—it was amazing to interact with him directly and feel that level of hospitality. I had lunch here with my mom, who’s a retired chef, and it was her first time visiting. We ordered the aguachile, spicy tuna tostadas and some ribeye tacos —all three were phenomenal! She was genuinely impressed, which says a lot. We also both had the Cantarito—mine with alcohol, hers without. She’s 15 years sober, and the bar staff made her a delicious non-alcoholic version of the same drink. That flexibility and thoughtfulness really stood out and made her feel completely included. Can’t wait to come back again soon with my mom to try the Sarandeado Fish!

As a Chicago local (yes I live in the city not the burbs) this place sucks. 3/4 bathroom stalls were unusable (one with an out of order sign, one with the handle ripped out of its hole, one with no light in the stall, and the final working one had the handle red turned to ‘in use’ but it was empty). We ordered the cochinita pibil and they gave us three tortillas for two people. Served with plain white rice!! For an alleged Mexican restaurant that’s insane. The pork was flavorless. The chips and salsa included like 7 chips and hardly any salsa. We had to walk through the restaurant to the hostess stand then back to the restaurant to be seated. Had to ask for water to be refilled. Drinks were weak and not tasty. I don’t think being in the loop is an excuse for this lack of quality.
