Hotel bars are commonplace. It makes sense to offer an on- site bar and restaurant because guests like the convenience, even if the food and drink is a little overpriced. Such is the case with Canteen Bar & Grill, a bar and eatery located at Cavalry Court Hotel in College Station, Texas.
Canteen Bar & Grill is a generally comfortable place for food and drink. There is a sense of togetherness when you eat and drink here, which is par for the course at this hotel. The long tables are like those of a cafeteria, perfect for conversing with others. If you want a little more privacy, you can find private tables, too. And if you like the ambiance of a fire, there is a fireplace you can cozy up next to with drink in hand.
This establishment often features live music, and it can get quite loud. It’s best to ask for a table on the far end, away from the band if you don’t want the distraction. If you like the outdoors, there is outdoor seating, too, close to the hotel pool. Keep in mind that this open end of the establishment is where the band is usually playing. Even though you’re outside, you won’t have any trouble hearing the tunes.
I like the food and drink at Canteen Bar & Grill. I usually go for the Cavalry burger, chicken sandwich, pork nachos, or sliders when I visit. There is a decent beer selection and a good number of specialty cocktails. The one issue I have is the prices- if you like cocktails and plan on downing several, you need to make sure to bring along plenty of cash because the cost will add up quickly. This is why I recommend visiting during happy hour, if possible, when the appetizers and drinks are cut down in price.
Hotel restaurants and bars are usually a little overpriced, but they offer convenience and Canteen Bar & Grill certainly fits the definition of what I expect in a hotel bar and grill, but with a little bit more. The fireplace, live entertainment, respectable beer selection, and friendly service are enough to earn this establishment an above average rating and recommendation. Forget about the higher prices and...
Read moreGreat place located in the heart of College Station. We came with a large group of friends after an early soccer game. The place was not crowded and they were able to accommodate our party in two very long tables, plenty of room from everyone. Placing our order was a little slow due to our large group and the need to split checks. However, our server Mikaila T was very good at splitting tickes and serving everybody the right food. She was so nice and welcoming and had a big smile the whole time, very friendly and a great job. Some people of our group wanted to get drinks fast and they ordered from the bar, which was not as busy at that time. The bartender was also friendly and fast getting those drinks. The manager was checking on every detail and making sure we were taking care. The food was really good, great big generous portions for the most part. I had the classic burger, and I can defenetly say it was one of the best I have ever had. The beef was very flavorful, the ingredients were fresh, and the bun was warm and soft with great flavor, too. The burger came with fries, and they were excelent too, crispy and soft on the inside and seasoned to perfection. I gave them 4 stars on the atmosphere because there was no music playing, and that is a big part of the experience. We will be coming back to this place that also offers some other amenities like an outdoor pool. Definitely come a check it out...
Read moreCute place within the Cavalry Court hotel...love the fireplace and the atmosphere is full of character, but the food is not the caliber it should be. This is a Valencia Hotel Group property...I expect more than a grossly undercooked hamburger patty that was ordered well-done to begin with. It's not even safe to serve a raw patty...how anyone can serve it in good conscience is beyond me. The hours of the restaurant are inconvenient and not even accommodating to hotel guests...during the time of our stay, the restaurant hours were closed the major portion of the day aside from continental breakfast times, so if hotel guests miss breakfast, they can forget about lunch, too. Then, when dinner time rolls around, I hope you are hankering for a raw burger because that's what you will get. Or...If you order a turkey sandwich, beware that it is served with a fried egg in the middle (not a fan). This venue was only 3 months into operating at the time of our stay, so I understand there are kinks to work out. Hopefully this property will refine their practices and quality quickly. The Valencia Group hotels state, "Our mission is to provide guests with a truly unique travel experience, delivering the finer aspects of travel with exceptional service." This visit fell quite short from 'exceptional service'. I think things will improve with time as they continue to refine their practices...hopefully...
