Odd Bird Cafe — Restaurant in Corvallis

We checked out Odd Bird's menu and reviews and chose to eat there on Father's Day while driving to Corvallis from McMinnville. The facility was pleasant and the location great. The restaurant was not at all busy at 1:45 on Father's Day, which surprised us a bit, and we were seated immediately and given menus. It didn't take long to order drinks which came quickly. Our server, Shawnee, came to take our order 5 or so minutes later. My husband ordered the salmon hash, which was the main reason we chose Odd Bird, and I ordered heirloom tomato "Benny" (aka eggs Benedict). I was given the options of several types of potatoes or fresh fruit. I chose the fruit. We waited and waited. Shawnee didn't check in with us at all even though my husband had coffee and would normally be offered refills periodically at most restaurants. We waited least 20 min. when Shawnee came to announce there was no more salmon. My husband was given a couple options, one of which was shrimp hash, which he chose. We then waited, and waited again. Shawnee didn't come over and we had to get her attention to get a coffee refill. Finally our food arrived...probably 10-15 min. after the hash change making it 30+ min. since our initial order. The dishes were really beautiful and we were hungry! Soon after we were served, Shawnee stopped to ask how things were. We said good, but we hadn't gotten into the meals totally yet. My husband liked the potatoes and portions of the hash but the shrimp was chopped up, soggy and tasteless. My heirloom tomatoes were hard and tasteless but the eggs were good and the hollandaise was okay. The fresh fruit was very good. We finished up quickly and sat for many minutes waiting to ask for 1 to go for my 1 uneaten eggs bene. The box and bill came. We were surprised to see an additional $2.00 charge for the fresh fruit. When Shawnee came to get the payment I did let her know she'd not told us there was an extra charge for fresh fruit. She essentially said it was toward the end of her day and didn't know what she was saying. She didn't offer to remove the charge. I should have insisted. Payment was done using a handheld machine which Shawnee was holding. I signed the machine and then the tip screen appeared. Shawnee was holding it and I felt uncomfortable with that. I did select the lowest % tip shown although there was a custom choice. My husband did not want to give any tip (we have been together 32 years and he's only not tipped twice) but I felt intimidated. So, long story, but we will not return to Odd Bird. Also, I strongly recommend the server either leave the handheld on the table and give the customer privacy or use some other more private method. The atmosphere was pleasant and the menu was appealing but the service was horrible. Once we were sat the waitress was very slow and uninformed throughout the whole visit. We sat for awhile and no food ever came. The people at the table behind us, who were seated well after we were, received their food before we did. The food they were given looked just like our order too. Turns out they were given our meal! In the meantime no one ever came to our table while we were waiting. We were able to get the waitresses attention and she came over and asked if we needed something because we kept looking at her. We said yes, where is our order, it has been quite a while. Turns out she knew they gave the order too the wrong table and was waiting for ours to be remade but didnt tell us. She acted as though she was offended that we were a little upset over this error and said her manager would come talk to us. The manager brought our food and apologized. The food was ok but one of the entrees had undercooked pork so we had to return it. We finished our other items and asked for the check. The waitress was not apologetic when she brought the check. The manager took the returned food cost off the bill, as it should have been, but made no more offers of apologies or compensation for the awful experience. We were never rude during this time and were surprised at how bad the visit went. Needless to say we will not be returning. Another couple dining told us they had terrible service as well so it seems to be an issue there. Hopefully will get better. This was actually my first time eating here. I had ordered it to go twice previously. To go the service was fine….

But I’m writing this review about the first time I ate there and my mom was with me.

It took over 30 min to even get food, they were not extremely busy we went around lunch time.

The guy who took us to the table and the lady who offered me a bag was very kind. But our waitress Shawnee was EXTREMELY snippy and rude. She brought over the receipt thing to pay for because she was the cashier. Well we didn’t realize we just paid like with our phone by scanning the QR code.

So we went up to the counter and she was like I saw you left money at the table but didn’t pay, so we were mentioning that we thought she could pay up there. Then I thought I could enter my number to get points and she was just trying to get us to hurry and pay and then was like well usually it will ask you after so I don’t know. And I was like well can we get a receipt and she basically ripped it off the notepad thing and gave it to us. It asked on there if you wanted a receipt and she just skipped it all…. As well as my mom tried to say well maybe you can go back and she’s like nopeeee. Super snippy. Like I’m sorry if maybe she didn’t get enough coffee this morning or something.

But I was really excited to finally eat there and take my mom because she is going through cancer treatment and this customer service is EXTREMELY unprofessional and rude. We have both worked in customer service food areas and this would NEVER be...
