I have been a fan of Hawkers ever since they opened! I'd say I've been there at least a dozen times, and every single time the food is out of this world. It's rare to find a restaurant with that kind of consistency in their food. On Friday night, I went with three friends who had never been there. I always love watching friends" faces light up when they get to taste the different fare Hawkers has to offer. To start, we had a couple orders of the roti for the table, two different bao buns, their amazing edamame, and the Korean chicken wings (which are ONE of the most delicious things I've ever tasted in my life). One of the things I love most about this restaurant is the food comes out as soon as it's made. There's no sitting under warmers at all, so you get your food at its peak temperature and flavor. I could go on and on and on about the food, but I think you're starting to understand that when you go to this restaurant, the food is a sure thing.
One of the things I want to go on and on about in my most recent visit, was the service! Our waitress Jasmine, was just fabulous! She was attentive, she didn't make any mistakes, she was funny, engaging, and knowledgeable about the menu. She knew the menu inside it and out, and was quick to recommend all the most delicious things! She checked on us regularly, made sure drinks were full, and made sure that we were wanting for nothing. Now, you may say to yourself, “that's what a server is supposed to do“. But it is so rare to see that kind of customer service, kindness, and competence in a restaurant anymore. My friend who was eating with me, is someone that I used to wait tables with 30 years ago, so we always appreciate incredible service. We felt like she really cared about our experience there, and it showed! I told her to send the manager over so that we could sing her praises, but it was a Friday night and it was kind of busy, and I think she was kind of humble. In a world where people are so quick to whine and complain, I told her I was going to write an incredible review for her because it's more important to praise when you see good work being done! Whoever hired Jasmine, thank you! It made an already great evening, even better! She is somebody that I will ask for the next time that we go to Hawkers, And my friends and I think she deserves a raise because she really went out of...
Read moreFirst time here I saw that this place had Bao and was rated well, so I swerved into the overcrowded parking (only free parking on Atlantic Ave from what I can tell…if you can find a spot)
It’s an Asian take on Spanish Tapas
Atmosphere Love it, we went on Friday night and sat outside, not too noisy, but lively and you can tel everyone here is enjoying it. Also when you have a waiter like Antonio with his light hearted view on life and fun description of the menu items, it makes it that much more enjoyable.
The food: We had 4 plates Here they are ranked from worst to best (worst is relative…as even the worst plate was still really good by normal standards) unfortunately the duck Bao ranks last from our selection. it was cooked well, but it wasn’t flavorful and there wasn’t enough meat in the bun Chinese BBQ Bao was next, much better flavor on this Bao, definitely wanted more, but there is a balance of flavoring needed when the Bao bun is present as it takes some of the flavor. Don’t think they’ve found that balance. Still good though, definitely devoured the whole thing. Bulgogi skewers - can’t go wrong with Bulgogi. Perfectly cooked beef skewers with just the right amount of flavor. The hidden gem in this dish though, is the side of house-made kimchi. I can’t describe it without using an oxymoron, but it tasted fresh. The flavor and kick were perfect. The two flavors of the Bulgogi and Kimchi are the perfect match of elegant and spicy….now that’s a KDrama I’d binge. (Side note: Kimchi isn’t for everyone, if you’ve never had it, this is a great place to try it, if you like kimchi just go ahead and order extra. It’s worth it.) Then there’s the Korean wings - never heard of double fried wings before. I was skeptical at first. Double fried just means crunchier. So the crunchy outside with the sweetness of the sauce gave it an almost “candied” texture and flavor on the outside, but once you bite in, you get the flavor of some perfectly cooked savory chicken with the slightest kick that ties everything together. It sounds odd, but they rank as one of my top 3 wings of all time.
Definitely coming back, possibly bringing more friends and the...
Read moreLabor Day special: We visited Hawkers Restaurant for a authentic Street Fare experience. Here is the breakdown. Ambiance: Restaurant is tucked in a sweet spot. Ample parking. The place is spread out nicely inside. There is an outdoor within the restaurant, which is great. Place was rocking, nice vibe to it. Very casual, waiters are very friendly. I love the name, Hawkers is very original as it refers to street hawkers in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and other pacific rim countries. Food: Menu is not too elaborate, price is moderate. Here is what we ordered. -Spring Rolls: full on vegetarian spring roll, excellent choice of fillings, veggies were crispy and seasonings were perfect. You get 2 pieces for $6.00. -Roti Canai: This dish is very popular in Malaysia, this is handmade layered flat bread comes with a side of Curry, where you dip the Roti into it. Roti was very authentic and curry is perfectly balanced. Not at all spicy, try it. You get 2 rotis with a side for $7.00. -Tom Yum Soup: This soup was wholesome, the Broth was excellent, a lot of vegetables and more than an handful of shrimp adorned this dish. For $14 bucks, this will fill you up with no guilt. -Sichuan Wontons: This dish was a bit doughy, steamed not fried gives this dish that doughy consistency. It has Chicken and shrimp filling, wasn't impressed with it though. It will set you back $11.00. -Korean Twice Fried Wings: Highly recommend this., they are really double fried, doused with Gochujang sauce and chopped peanuts. It was a real treat for $12.00. -Chicken Satay: This dish completely missed the mark, no flavor at all, this was the only disappointment of the evening., $11 for three skewers. -Last one for the road.. Siu Yoke: Crispy fried Pork Belly, I don't eat pork., but my buddy vouched for the dish, he devoured it in few minutes., it must be yummy. Siu Yoke costs $10 per order. Conclusion: Great place to visit with family or friends, food service is super fast, Full bar at your service, multi oriental cuisine. I will visit again as it is close to...
