Lou's is a bit out of my way and I hate the parking situation, so I had not visited in quite some time. However, it was an off hour and I had a yen for a good sandwich, so I made the trip. I turned right on 33rd Avenue--just before getting to the restaurant--and was easily able to find parking. There's also a well-defined crosswalk on Downing at that point, so I was able to cross to Lou's side of the street without difficulty.
The shop was as charming as ever, jammed full of a wide variety of deli items ranging from meats and cheeses to drinks, frozen items, breads, pastries, a wide choice of salads, and some grocery items. There's very limited seating inside, but a nice patio outside.
The menu includes appetizers, green salads, a large variety of deli salads, half a dozen hot entrées, paninis, hot and cold sandwiches, and a nice case of pastries. Lou's also does catering and box lunches.
I had ordered on the Web site. A friendly staffer handed me my well-packaged bag of goodies. I ordered the Louie, an Italian sandwich with salami, capicola, ham, provolone, lettuce, tomato, red onion, mayo, olive oil, and red wine vinegar plus a pasta salad. Both items were very fresh and absolutely delicious. The roll was authentic and toothsome. The half sandwich I ordered was reasonably priced, generous, and filled me up. I definitely need to see Lou...
Read moreWhen you serve FOOD to people DO IT WITH RESPECT! take pride in everything you create!! It is a reflection of you!! In a place like that I expect to see nothing less than exceptional! The guy in the white jacket looked at me like he was displeased to see me but I also thought that was just how he looked. Kinda like the cousin from that show "The Bear" they just got that disappointed look.👀 But after a10$ 4 inch mushy sandi I realized he just don't want me to come back.
Overpriced!! At first because of the atmosphere I thought it was going to be high quality...boy was I wrong they want certain people to eat there and they make sure "certain" people feel welcome. All of my veggies are always old, sandwich was SOGGY🙄 IT really upset me because I tipped them and said thank you.smdh if you are poor and minority u may not get fresh food. I lived in really nice neighborhoods I've seen GREAT SERVICE and I've had incredible quality...this was not it. I had fresher food from subway. I can make a better sandwich. I cooked with more PASSION when i lied about my age to get a job at 14 cooking burgers at McDonald's. I WAS passionate and PROUD OF WHAT I MADE AND I HAD EVEN MORE RESPECT FOR THE PEOPLE EATING IT. I used to get excited to see the expression on the face of my customers when they would open their box and see how fresh...
Read moreWe tried two sandwiches, the Severino Grande and the Porchetta Broccoli Rabe as well as the tomato soup. Everyone in the family was fighting over the soup as it is hands down the richest, chunkiest, creamiest and most flavorful tomato soup we've ever had the pleasure of eating. Tho make it even better it came with a piece of soft fresh baked bread perfect for dipping with a soft center and crisp crust. The sandwiches we're a mixed bag for us. We all enjoyed the Severino, which was as big as my 4 year old's head and made for some funny pics as she wrestled it into her mouth. It was spilling over with delicious cured meats and fresh greens. The Porchetta came highly recommend by the staff and while tasty, was difficult to enjoy due to the texture of the pork and the sogginess of the bread. We only went as far as the table outside the door to eat and the sandwich was a soggy mess, I would not recommend taking one to go. Over all we really enjoyed the food and will certainly return for more soup and to split a Severino. On a side note, they sell pasta sauce to go, and though we did not get one on this first visit, based in the tomato soup experience we're planning on returning to...
