You arrive to find a food truck parked next to an old building that houses it's seating. Dining space is in the building, though apparently I am one of few intending to use it. I order what has familiar ingredients and go inside to wait.
The dining space is authentic, for better or worse... There is a nice tile floor put down in what might have been an old manufacturing site. Curtains almost hide rooms that are used for storage or living in. The light is off, perhaps to save electricity. And woman watches a TV to pass time as there have been no customers inside recently. Most get food to go from the truck. The space is clean, but smells strongly of a perfumed cleaner. I wondered if I had made a mistake in coming here.
The woman gets up, and turns on the light with a smile. I notice a Coca-Cola branded bottle opener screwed to the wall as haphazardly as I had seen in every tiny restaurant from Cancún to Mérida years ago. The chairs are of a style from that time.
Then the food arrives. A chimichanga con pollo. It looks very different. Long, grilled, from a thick hand made tortilla. One bite and perfumed cleaner vanished. This was one of the best things I have put in my mouth in years. I could not stop until the last of it was gone. And now I weep and mourn for it.
Well... Everything except that last sentence is true. 5 stars because once you taste it, nothing...
Read moreI was in town for work-related reasons. I happened to find this place highly rated by the Google overlords. To my surprise its rating is well-deserved. I can confidently say it's one of the best Mexican places I've eaten in a very long time. I asked the gentlemen attending what was the best dish. They recommended the adobada quesadilla. It's made from slightly fried corn masa with plenty of fillings including lettuce, tomato, and a bit of sour cream. They have 3 salsas to choose from: red, green, and "picosa". The last one isn't for the faint of heart; you will definitely feel it during your drive back to Seattle. It was a very substantial quesadilla. I also ordered a small cup of frijoles. I don't usually say it but even the beans were delicious. The horchata is...
Read moreMeh. Typical mexican food truck. Tasted fine but the guy operating the truck has no business dealing with customers face to face. No people skills and VERY uninviting. I ordered 4 carne asada tacos and they were about the most bland tacos ever. consisting of meat, onions, cilantro. Thats it. Tortillas were very lightly toasted but thats it. Price was high for what I ordered, I felt. Theres a very small parking area out front but for the most part you gotta park off site and walk to the truck. I'll definitely give my money to the Genesis Mexican food Stand up on University Ave before I...
