It’s a pretty bold statement when you say that you have New Haven style pizza. Your pizza better live up to that statement. Being born and raised in New Haven, Connecticut , I know exactly what New Haven pizza is like. I continue make frequent trips to New Haven to visit family and while visiting family, I always hit up my favorite pizza joints. To begin with, their pizza is on the pricey side. They only make one size pizza which is 14 inches. I ordered the vegetable pizza and I ordered a couple slices of cheese pizza. The flop factor of the vegetable pizza was pretty extreme and the contents were a bit runny. The pizza also was a bit oily. It looks like they focus on thin crust pizza here. But in my opinion, the crust is too thin and not cooked enough. With cheese slices that I ordered, I asked them if they could cook them a little longer. When I ate them, they were overcooked and again it was a thin crusted pizza. (The flop factor was good on the cheese pizza though). New Haven Pizza is unique because it’s very crunchy pizza because it’s Woodfired pizza or sometimes coal fired. The pizza here was cooked in a regular pizza oven. The pizza sauce tasted good and the ingredients had a decent taste to them. But, I have to say this is far from New Haven style pizza. The pizza that they’re serving here reminds me of a pizza joint in New Haven by the name of Bar. They also have thin crusted pizza, but not as thin as they make it here. With all that being said, I still recommend coming here. I still feel it’s one of the better pizza joints in the area. The atmosphere was nice and the service was very good. I would come back. Best of Eugene. So, The Wheel is the homiest little bourgeois pizza joint in Eugene. The prices may drive away the tenuously-financed, but they should save up. It is possible, however unlikely, that everyone who works here is awesome. Vibes from the open kitchen are wildly positive, where laughter is common. Bar-minding Montanan sisters Audrey and Sophia are competent, open and hilarious in ways that belie their years. The beers on tap are uniformly excellent. An especially unique offering, “Moonglow — A Brett Solera Project” is exemplary in spite of it’s pretentious name. The wood finished floors, paneling, beam rafters, and countertops are beautiful and embrace the PNW aesthetic ethos effortlessly. They have the largest version of the Allen Cartography map of Oregon available, the 4’x5’, on the wall. They have a vintage Wilco poster made just for their trip to Eugene in 2012. They have, by the bar, a giant blowup of a 1982 dance party in the parking lot of the Oregon Country Fair on a year when the Grateful Dead showed up for the weekend. They have Wildcraft cider and craft sodas and exciting, beautiful cocktails that aren’t rushed at expense of perfection. Please believe! And attend. Best of Eugene.

The Wheel delivered last night! From the moment we rolled up we were drawn in by the ambiance and smell. As we walked inside the people were both relaxed and attentive. We first looked at the beer selection, there were many. We taste tested a few and made our choices. The Vanora Amber and a Peach Scando. Amazingly refreshing after a solid work session. We ordered two pies and a salad to share among the four of us. Quick service! The salad got us ready for the main event. The pies came via the cook (his name was John)bringing to our table, visually they were impressive, no time to take pictures, we were ready to eat. The pies were perfect—even char, nice puff on the tender cornicione, not too much sauce or cheese to overdo it, the topping too were just the right amount, even the hold-out on the crust was perfect. The ingredients and tastes came together and were better than the sum of the parts. For me, that is what pizza is meant to be. Bravo! We hung out longer than we planned because the atmosphere was so good. What a nice addition to the Eugene food scene!

IF YOU WANT CHEESE ON YOUR PIZZA YOU HAVE TO SAY THE MAGIC WORD!

Reading from a note card since my party wrote it down. “Hi, I’d like to order a custom pizza. Red sauce, pepperoni, mozzarella, cashew cheese and garlic”

Pizza arrives*

“Excuse me, this pizza was supposed to have mozzarella on it?”

“You have to say “both”, sorry”

“I did. I read my order off this card I have here….mozzarella, cashew cheese, garlic”

“Yeah but if you have to say “both” or you don’t get any”

“Even if I order mozzarella I don’t get mozzarella because I didn’t say the magic word “both””

“That’s correct, you must use the secret magic word if you want cheese on your pizza”

Wheel ah please! I ordered a sprite I got a sprite, but if I order cheese without the magic word I don’t get any?!

What other secret magic words to I need to know to order what I want?

The pizza is good! Really good, unfortunately I’m too scared to order what I want for fear that there is a secret magic word I don’t know and I won’t get what order.

I didn’t even want this pizza it was for other people in my group, but when the pizza arrived they didn’t want it because there was no cheese so instead they ate the pepperoni and left none for me. My husband flagged down a different waitress and simply told her we didn’t get the mozzarella like we ordered and could we get one made. She happily agreed to have it remade, but by that point I couldn’t take it anymore and had to leave. At least there is leftover pizza for a pizza I didn’t even want. It’s not their fault my party and I didn’t know there was magic word or that my party ate all the pepperoni. This was our first visit, guess I should have known? I don’t think I could ever go back. My brain just can’t comprehend ordering mozzarella on a pizza but not getting it because I didn’t say the magic word. $100 for 3 pizzas and I didn’t get any.

BUT YOU DIDN'T SAY “BOTH” literally say the word “both” or you don’t get cheese.

I could understand if I ordered a Pizza off the menu and mistakenly assumed it came with cheese, but that was not the case. I literally said “mozzarella”, but that wasn’t...

Updated to original review: Changed my review from 2 stars to 1 because the credit they were supposed to put back on my card for the mushrooms that they didn't actually put on my pizza never came through. So I paid extra for mushrooms and didn't get them. NEVER going to this place again. So sad. Original Review: My husband and I went here tonight 10/27/18 for the first time and were pretty disappointed. The place is cool looking inside but too many communal tables. We ordered our pizza and salad to go. We ordered the sausage and pepper pizza and the full sized mixed green salad. First, I ordered the pizza with mushrooms and they charged $1 extra for which is totally fine. But we didn’t get mushrooms. Thankfully I always look at our to-go orders before we leave. I told them it didn’t have mushrooms and they gave us back our $1 plus $2 more for the inconvenience which was very nice. But I really wanted mushrooms but didn’t want to wait for them to make another pizza. But the pizza itself just wasn’t very good. The sauce is way too tangy and bland. The dough is really thin and flimsy. We reheated it when we got home at a high temp but it was still so limp. The most disappointing thing was that we literally got 1-2 small pieces of sausage and only 1 slice of pepper per slice. Super chintzy!!! If I order a pizza with only a few toppings I certainly expect there to be a decent amount. The salad was also mediocre. The dressing was so vinegary!!! Not flavorful. Totally bummed about this. I really don’t think we’ll go again and wouldn’t...
