My wife and I ate there last night. Let me tell you some of the good the bad and the food poison. The night started off well enough. We were looking for a restaurant to eat. It was our first and only night in Fairbanks and for some reason we settled on this establishment. The decore was fine but a little weird but that's not here nor there. The wall with a rug stapled to it was odd. So my wife and I usually order the calamari wherever we go. It's our comfort food. Then she orders the Garlic Prawns and I go with the Gyro. The calamari comes first. Oddly enough it comes topped with big chunks of white onions chopped up on top of it. (not really something you see come topped with calamari) So we shrug it off and try to push forward. The tentacles were passable but the rings were just rubber. Chewy and hard to get down. Then my wife got her salad. Not really much there to complain about as it was a house salad with dressing. Few pieces of bad lettuce but you tell yourself "It's a remote(ish) area" and go about shrugging it off... Thinking that the calamari would be the worst of the night.... Then the entrees come and boy were we wrong. Both of our entrees come with side" potatoes, some kind of candied carrots and rice. I take two bites of my gyro and notice there's no cucumber or feta on my Gyro and a few forks of each side and flag my waitress down. She asks if everything is ok. I brought up there's no feta on the Gyro and she says "that's how it's made" here. Now I don't know how to explain how the texture of what that gyro was other than to compare it to a truck stop microwaved bean burrito. Gyros have a zip of tzatziki with the toughness of the lamb and beef mixture and the crunch of cucumber with the fresh tomato. This was eating a wet soggy pita, tzatziki and microwaved meat. My wife who saw me throw in the towel after two bites of the main course asked me if I wanted to try hers. I bit into one of the shrimp I immediately spit it out. It was tougher than the pre-mentioned calamari. The sugared up carrots and the bland potatoes be damned. The barley warm rice is what caught my tongue. The table runner quickly saw our plates set aside and took them from our table and our pleasant server came and asked us if we wanted deserts. We promptly said no and without our plates in front of us to discuss our completely dissatisfying meal we paid our tab and got out of there. Tipped accordingly for service. Then about an hour out on the town our stomachs started hurting. Funny in recollection I said "I hope I could throw this all up to enjoy the rest of our night" BOY WAS I WRONG. We promptly went back to the hotel and did just that. Except there wasn't the enjoyment of the night. I can explain to you in grave detail but I think you'll catch the drift. It was the rice that did us in but there was nothing pleasant left to throw up. Honest and...
Read moreVisiting from abroad and we were recommended this restaurant by two separate sources. Due to severe weather they were short staffed but still managed to serve us quickly and were very helpful and friendly. We ordered appetizers (the wine plate and the eggplant dip with pita bread). The appetizers were good and generous serving size.
We had the the halibut and the moussaka. Once again, generous portions, but the halibut tasted of a distinct “fish” taste that should have been eliminated if rinsed properly. It was also overcooked and dry which made it almost inedible. The sides (whipped potatoes and the sweet carrots) were ok but the carrots were overcooked and almost mushy.
Since it is a greek restaurant we expected the moussaka to be a signature dish and a “safe” choice. And it looked absolutely mouthwatering when it came out but lacked sorely in flavour. The texture was there and a balanced proportion between meat, béchamel sauce and eggplant. But when I bit into it it tasted bland. It lacked spices and I could taste flour in the béchamel.
A bit disappointing since the place came highly recommended. Once again, the staff were flawless and attentive despite being understaffed.
A side note: the locale is pleasantly decorated but the floor in the side part of the room where we sat shook every time someone walked on it, so much so that our table wobbled. Also the acoustics were not doing the place any favours. Even though people around us spoke in normal tone, we could hear every conversation three tables away. If you’re looking for a dining experience with ambiance and authentic Mediterranean flavours,...
Read moreI was working at FT Wainwright and went to dinner here with some colleagues. We made reservations for four to eat at 7. When we arrived one of the group said it smelled like grandma’s house. And not when she is baking cookies…the mildew smelling basement. We were seated quickly around 705 and our drinks (just waters) were brought quickly. We ordered around 715 - an appetizer of Saganoki, the prime rib, warm chicken salad, gyro, and a pizza. The salads that came with the prime rib and gyro came out quickly. They both looked and tasted great. The Saganoki came out next and our friend said she had never had one not come out “on fire”. When she tried it she said it was not right. Another person tried it as well and he said it was horrible. The main courses….well they can out AFTER numerous questions to the waiter at 835. Yes 1 hour and 20 minutes later. Then when they brought it out they brought the steak and salad….5 minutes later the gyro….5 more minutes the pizza. I am not a restaurant manager but why do you bring out plates at different times. We are all waiting to eat together. Meanwhile the manager/owner whatever never came to the table to check on us we had to stop the waiter to ask for drinks and status of the meals. The absolute worst service and experience I have ever had a restaurant…EVER. I would not recommend going here unless you have money to burn, you are not hungry (because you will be waiting), you like the mildew smell, and EVERYTHING...
