I had the worst experience imaginable at Burlock on 3/19/24. I have friends who have shared stories of discrimination while dining, but I made it to 37 years of age without experiencing it.
I sat at one of the tables facing the ocean and was ignored for at least 10 minutes. A couple arrived about 10 minutes after me and was promptly waited on by the server who ignored me. Some of my best friends are service workers so I gave her the benefit of the doubt. I know how busy things can get. Another 5 minutes go by, and she never approached me. Eventually, her ‘assistant” approaches me and takes my order. I inquired about the server assigned to me and he told me that she was busy and that he was helping her. The server continued to service the couple sitting to my left and acknowledged their presence whenever she came outside while ignoring me. Eventually, I waved at the waiter and called her over to better understand why she was ignoring me. After all, her “assistant” told me that she was my server and that he was just assisting. If that was truly the case, she would have found time to come over and acknowledge my presence and check on me. I asked her if she was my waiter. She proceeded to ask me if there was anything she could do for me and told me that she was never assigned to me. Knowing that she was lying to me, I approached the maître d that seated me and put my name in the system. She confirmed that the woman who was ignoring me was indeed the waiter who was assigned to me.
A manager got involved and told me that he needed to discuss with all parties to determine where the breakdown in communication occurred. There was no breakdown in communication. This white woman refused to serve a black man and jumped at the opportunity to serve the white couple that was sitting about 1 foot away from me. I am a college-educated, tax-paying homeowner who wouldn't harm a fly. I have done everything that I have been told I am supposed to do to have a good life as a person of color living in America and was still subjected to this kind of treatment. Thank God for security cameras. Everything that I mentioned above can be validated and this establishment has not heard the last of me. I will note that I have been to this establishment numerous times without receiving this treatment. However, the male who came over to take my order was very defensive of this young lady when I started asking questions. This is not the first time that she has treated someone of...

I cannot confirm the following, but having dined here a couple of times, and by looking through video interviews, it appears that Exec. Chef, Gavin Pera, follows the R&DE Stanford Dining Culinary Standards; to which there are 15 points you can look up and peruse through.
Given that friends raved about this restaurant in the Ritz Carlton, I wanted to take my sister there for a birthday brunch. Erring on the side of caution, I called two days before and made a reservation for 11:00 a.m.
When we arrived at the chic seaside eatery, we were greeted by dashing Jerry who turned out to be the General Manager. He escorted us to our booth and soon Sensua, our server, took our drink order: Rum runner (my favorite cocktail here) and mimosas for mami and titi.
Our entire meal was extraordinary! We had the Herb Focaccia infused with olive oil and Tuna Tartare with tostones as a snack. Then we followed with Huevos Rancheros; two eggs, chorizo, black beans and green sauce on the side. Market Egg White & Vegetable Omelette with seasoned potatoes and herbs was mami's choice, and the Birthday princess selected the Tempura Grouper with creamy lime slaw.
Our server was heaven sent, he pampered us with fruit and then surprised us with champagne and key lime pie for my sister, that I did not request nor set up (please see photos) but it tied my sister’s birthday celebration with a shiny bow!
The elegant, laidback ambiance here makes me happy and the ocean view and scent makes me feel like a tourist in my own backyard. I only wish I didn't have the refined taste of a Queen while living on an equerry's salary. I would come here every couple of weeks until I tried each and every offering on the menu. It is a bit pricey--but oh so worth it!
Circling back to the 15-point standard, they clearly meet all but this platform solely accommodates five. I hope you visit soon and tell us about...
Read moreEDITED: After emailing corporate and sharing my experience, local management reached out to me and invited me back to give BC another try. I returned in late December and had a completely wonderful experience. As always, the food was on point. I will be returning and amended my review. It is very rare nowadays that a corporate behemoth such as Marriott personally reaches out to right a wrong. My loyalty was acknowledged and appreciated. It is the reason I will be returning!
Very disappointing experience, as others have stated. Let me preface by saying I have frequented Burlock Coast on many occasions solo & with friends. Went last night (Saturday) with a good friend who is a local and also frequents BC. It was only about 40% occupied, including the bar. The outdoor seating was empty and there were only four people against the rail. So I went in and asked for outdoor seating. Host asked me if I had a reservation. No. Am I staying at the Ritz? No. She proceeds to say they are “fully committed“ tonight and since I’m not staying at the Ritz I can ONLY sit at the bar either outside or inside. I couldn’t even sit at any of the inside tables…Yes you read that correctly. I looked around incredulously as they were completely empty inside. I waited for my friend to arrive, we looked at the outside bar - it was full, (only seats about 10 by the way) so we left. I don’t know what the deal is with the Ritz’s elitist mentality, I was staying at a Marriott down the street. I’m titanium level and the Ritz is a Marriott property. With so many choices on that street, we walked a few blocks and had a great dinner, outside with a view, with great service, and a friendly host. I cannot understand why the Ritz insists on treating people like peasants when clearly they’re going there because they have money they want to spend for over priced food and drink. It’s a shame, because their food is pretty good. But the management needs to take a look at how they run that restaurant. I definitely won’t be giving it...
