DC Alexander Park is named in honor of David Clifford “D.C.” Alexander, an early Fort Lauderdale resident who saw the potential of Ft. Lauderdale beach to attract tourists long before spring break. As an early beach developer he was involved in building the original Las Olas Intracoastal Bridge in 1917 and operating the Las Olas Inn. Mt. Alexander donated the land for the park nd the land for the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex and the International Swimming Hall of Fame which the park sits across from.
Situated on A1A, for many years the land was used as a parking lot and passive park. if you noticed it all it might have been for the giant carved cypress Native American head statue that is part of Trail of the Whispering Giants by Hungarian artist Peter Wolf Toth. However keep your eye peeled now because big things are coming to this park!
The Ft. Lauderdale City Commission has approved a $9 million agreement with Shiff Construction & Development for a DC Alexander Park improvement plan. It is the 4th and final phase of the Las Olas Oceanside Parks project, which includes Las Olas Oceanside Park, Las Olas Intracoastal Promenade Park, and the Las Olas Garage with a sunset rooftop terrace. Plans for the park include a public art overlook, playground, and native landscaping. A ground breaking ceremony for this project was held on February 16, 2023.
I bemoan the loss of yet more beach parking but the plans for the park look really cool. If you visit now, all you can see is a desolate fenced in lot although there is some really great metered parking right next to it. The only remanent of the old park is the Trail of Whispering Giants statue peeking his head over the fence. The plans online for the park don't include the statue so I am interested to see how the city decides to use this landmark as the park development progresses. The park was supposed to be finished by the end of this summer but based on what I saw, it does not look like that is going to happen. I will be eagerly monitoring the progress during my visits to the beach...
